Holiday apartment in Medzibrod: Nature and Culture
Medzibrod brings together protected nature, a river landscape and a long-established local history within a small area. North of the Hron are woodland areas and the Máčková Nature Reserve, while in the village a Rococo church, a historic chapel, a water tower for steam locomotives and its own travelling theatre recall different chapters in the history of the village.
Nature
The part of Medzibrod’s cadastral area located north of the Hron belongs to the NAPANT protected area. The 42.23-hectare Máčková Nature Reserve is also located north of Medzibrod. Numerous pasque flowers grow there; woodland-steppe and near-natural beech forest communities have also been preserved. Forests cover almost 60 percent of Medzibrod’s cadastral area. The lady’s slipper is considered a characteristic plant of Medzibrod’s flora and blooms in natural beech forests on limestone soil.
Water also shapes the geographical setting of the village. The Hron runs along the eastern and southern side of Medzibrod; the Vyvieranica and Močiar streams flow into it. Protected habitats, beech forests and the waterways of the village area are therefore linked in a clear geographical context.
Cycling
A cycle route passes through Medzibrod and connects the village with Hiadeľ, Brusno and Pohronský Bukovec.
Culture and History
The parish church in Medzibrod was built of stone in the Rococo style in 1790 and consecrated on 16 May 1791. The church contains an organ loft, a mechanical tower clock and three bells; the organ underwent extensive restoration in 2008. The furnishings also include eight stained-glass windows created for the church by the artist Ladislav Cserba in 2008 and 2009.
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Medzibrod was built as a votive chapel in 1808. It commemorates the rescue of the inhabitants living along the Hron from ice backed up in the river. The village name also points to an older geographical connection: Medzibrod is associated with the historic location between fords.
Another historic feature is the water tower in Medzibrod, which was used to fill steam locomotives. In the local cultural scene, the Medzibrodské kočovné divadlo focuses mainly on Slovak and foreign classical plays with a comedic character.
Traditions
The Haruľová šou, held every September, is a competition between teams for the Haruľa of the Year and is accompanied by an extensive cultural programme and side events. The Haruľová šou also includes a competition for the longest potato peel.
