Banská Bystrica offers several ways to experience history, culture, nature and outdoor activities. Political memories, historic buildings, museum collections and trails with different characteristics stand side by side.
History
On 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Uprising was declared in Banská Bystrica as armed resistance against the fascist occupation.
Another historical chapter is represented by Medený hámor, which reflects the town’s long industrial past. Medený hámor operated almost continuously for nearly 500 years, from 1496 to 1991. The complex currently comprises four protected structures: “Hiarty”, “Dielne”, “Výrobné haly” with laboratories and electrolysis, and the “Vodný náhon”. Medený hámor is a technical monument of international importance in Banská Bystrica.
Culture
Thurzov dom is a three-storey urban palace dating from the beginning of the 16th century and is now home to the Stredoslovenské múzeum. The permanent Tranzithistory exhibition at Thurzov dom presents the development and history of the building, the city of Banská Bystrica and the region. The permanent exhibition at Thurzov dom displays more than 2,000 collection objects from archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and fine art.
The Historical Tour starts at the Clock Tower on Námestie SNP. On Národná ulica, it includes the building of the Štátna opera and the Hotel Národný dom.
Nature
The thematically arranged Príroda stredného Slovenska exhibition at Tihányiovský kaštieľ uses plant and animal exhibits to convey an impression of the nature of the Banská Bystrica region.
The Urpínska kalvária consists of eight stations with a chapel, a church standing on the hill, a tree-lined avenue and a small monastery. The Serpentíny Urpín educational trail is 3.6 km long, takes about 2.5 hours and is rated easy to moderately difficult.
Trails
The Banská Bystrica-Mesto railway station below Urpín, also known as “Malá stanica”, is a starting point for the serpentine trail up Urpín. The Barborská cesta begins and ends in Banská Bystrica and is divided into nine stages. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle.
Accommodation: You can also check how many people an offer is intended for and which services are included in the price. When reviewing prices, it is worth checking for possible additional components so that the totals remain transparent. Payment, booking and cancellation conditions may also be worded differently depending on the offer. Comparing these points keeps the selection open without narrowing the focus to the various options. The exact location can be considered separately from the type of accommodation, while included services and optional costs remain clearly listed on their own. This makes it possible to compare location, capacity, services, price components and conditions side by side before making a booking.
