Holiday apartment in Povrazník – Nature, Trails and Village History
Povrazník combines the landscape of Poľana with an unusually rich village history. The cadastral area of Povrazník belongs to the Poľana Biosphere Reserve. Poľana is the highest and best-preserved volcanic mountain range in Slovakia. The uniqueness of the village is also evident geologically: among mineralogists, Povrazník is known for deposits of wood opals that formed during volcanic activity near Poľana.
The volcanic cave Ďuríkova diera is located near Povrazník. The area around Povrazník is also regarded as a popular mushroom-picking region. Natural formations, geological traces and the landscape of the volcanic mountain range thus exist side by side, without reducing the village to just one facet.
History
The first written reference to Povrazník dates from 22 May 1424; at that time, the village was listed as Powraznik among the villages belonging to the Ľupča estate. The history of Povrazník is closely connected with mining. The inhabitants specialised in making ropes, which were supplied mainly to the mines of Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Staré Hory. Linen and rag rugs were still being woven in Povrazník until the middle of the 20th century.
A vivid testament to this rope-making tradition can be found below Brezina on the road to Majer. Three large rocks lie there, each weighing about one tonne and containing centrally positioned holes approximately 15 to 20 centimetres in diameter. Pegs were fixed in these places. Long bundles of hemp fibres were twisted from rock to rock and braided into ropes used to lower miners into the pits.
Culture
Several wooden log houses and original examples of folk culture have been preserved in Povrazník. Log house No. 59 dates from 1880 and is listed as a cultural monument. The Povrazník bell tower is also part of the village landscape. It contains a small bell from 1745 and a large bell from 1792. A memorial plaque to General Dr M. R. Štefánik was unveiled at the bell tower in 1928.
The construction of the bell tower also contributes to its historical distinctiveness: it has a masonry ground floor and a wooden upper floor built using a post-and-beam construction with wooden boarding. The Povrazník Municipal Museum opened in 2008 and contains restored exhibits, most of which were collected by local residents. It includes a room dedicated to folk traditions, a classroom, and a collection of televisions and radios. The traditional costume of Povrazník belongs to the Poniky variant of the Detva costume type.
