Păuleni-Ciuc: Archaeology, Culture and Crafts

The medieval archaeological site of Păuleni-Ciuc in the Delnița district is located by the village church in Tordavölgye. Păuleni-Ciuc is also home to the Roman Catholic church. It was built on the site of the old chapel and consecrated in 1949. The church preserves the altar that was rescued from the fire in which the old chapel was destroyed. The church building thus connects the site of the former chapel with the preserved altar and the present-day Roman Catholic church.

Culture

A carved gate by Bakó Ferenc at house number 40 in Păuleni-Ciuc is listed as a monument in the 1992 register of monuments of Harghita County. In front of the cultural centre of Păuleni-Ciuc, the Heroes’ Monument commemorates 33 people from Păuleni who died in the world wars. Along with the archaeological site and the church, a handcrafted gate and a place of remembrance are therefore also part of the municipality’s cultural heritage.

The Mânăstirea Franciscană Miercurea Ciuc monastery is located in the immediate surroundings of Păuleni-Ciuc. The peaks Vârful Tuns, Dealul Stejarului and Vârful Cereatatii are also nearby. When visiting peaks, current route conditions should be checked before departure.

At Mézözön in Păuleni-Ciuc, visitors can learn about beekeeping and honey processing, as well as more about the everyday life of bees and natural honey production. Mézözön’s programme presents various types of honey, including acacia honey, forest honey and hawthorn honey. Visits to Mézözön are only possible by prior appointment. Alongside the historical sites, this provides insights into a specific area of food production.

Upon request, visitors can learn how to weave carpets in Păuleni-Ciuc. Visitors can also learn how to prepare Cozonac secuiesc upon request. The famous woollen carpets from the Ciuc area are woven in the municipality of Păuleni-Ciuc. Weaving, the preparation of Cozonac secuiesc and the production of woollen carpets each represent distinct connections to crafts and regional tradition. The appointment requirement applies to visits to Mézözön; weaving and the preparation of Cozonac secuiesc are explicitly described as activities available upon request.
