Turcineşti: History, Folklore and Forested Floodplains

Turcineşti combines an early documented village history with Casa Manta, a historic monument from the 19th century. The village of Turcineşti is first mentioned in a document dated 5 August 1424 and is also named in a document dated 28 October 1428. Casa Manta is listed in the village as a historic monument under LMI code GJ-II-m-B-09420. Casa Manta dates from the 19th century. Casa Manta thus adds a later historical accent: the 19th-century building stands alongside the early documentary records, without equating the two periods. The documentary references from the 15th century and the monument dating from the 19th century belong to separate historical phases.

Landscape

The landscape of Turcineşti commune consists mainly of forested hills and floodplains formed by the local waterways. Forested elevations and water-shaped areas therefore create two distinct landscape forms within the commune. Several peaks are also located in the wider regional surroundings of Turcineşti: Fața Babei, Runcul Mare, Muncel and Piscul Merișor. These peaks complement the landscape with prominent elevations beyond the forested hills and floodplains. The floodplains form along the local waterways, while the forested hills constitute the commune's other prominent landscape form.

Cultural Route and Festivals

The “Târgu Jiu–Turcineşti–Schela–Bumbeşti-Jiu/Petroşani” cultural route passes through Turcineşti. The “În vale pe Cărtior” folklore festival is also associated with several dates and venues. The first edition took place on 27 June 2024 at Casa Cartienilor and at the Turcineşti Cultural Centre. At the Cultural Centre, this first edition also included a performance of the traditional Hora Satului.

The 2025 edition of the “În vale pe Cărtior” folklore festival was held at Casa Cartianu in Turcineşti and took place at Casa Cartianu on 11 October 2025. In Rugi, an open-air event called Ziua Cireșului takes place every year in June. Zilele Comunei Turcinești takes place every year from 1 to 2 October. Before travelling, current event dates, opening hours for the cultural venues mentioned and transport schedules can be checked, as dates and practical arrangements are time-dependent.
