The pastoral folklore festival “Coborâtul oilor de la munte” has been held annually in Baia de Fier since 1993.

Culture and History

The historic “Toți Sfinții” Church in Baia de Fier is a church dating from 1750. It dates from the period between 1749 and 1753. The place of worship contains original paintings. It also has an enclosing wall.

The Orthodox wooden church “Sf. Arhangheli” in Baia de Fier dates from 1809.

The Petru-Flondor estate comprises houses and outbuildings. These buildings date from the 20th century and are well preserved.

Baia de Fier has a museum collection. It focuses on ethnography and local history.

The find from Peștera Muierilor is a fragment of a female skull. Its age was dated to approximately 30,000 years.

Baia de Fier therefore brings together evidence from different periods: the “Toți Sfinții” Church from the 18th century, the wooden church from 1809 and the Petru-Flondor estate with its 20th-century buildings. The museum collection complements these historic sites with ethnographic and local-history content.

Rocks, Caves and Protected Areas

Cheile Galbenului is located in the northeast of Gorj County. The gorge stretches for almost 2 km. Its walls are steep.

Peștera Muierilor is located in the commune of Baia de Fier. It is Romania’s first electrified cave.

The ROSCI0128 Nordul Gorjului de Est Site of Community Importance includes protected areas in Baia de Fier. Peștera Muierilor is one of these areas.

Peștera Iedului is also among the protected areas of the ROSCI0128 Nordul Gorjului de Est Site of Community Importance.

The landscape thus combines the almost two-kilometre-long Cheile Galbenului with the two caves mentioned above. It is also recorded that Peștera Muierilor lies within the commune of Baia de Fier and is considered Romania’s first electrified cave.

The Via Ferrata routes in Cheile Galbenului comprise 21 possible ascent variants. These variants differ in length. Their difficulty levels also vary.

Getting There
