Târgu Jiu: Monumental Art, Museums and Theatre

The Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu is a creative masterpiece. It belongs to the monumental art of the 20th century. The complex is arranged along an axis. This axis is conceptual and 1,500 metres long. The ensemble was built between 1937 and 1938. Its construction served to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Romanian soldiers, police officers and ordinary citizens. These people died during the First World War. They died while defending the city of Târgu Jiu. The years 1937 and 1938 also mark the period in which the work was created and Constantin Brâncuși’s working period on the monumental Calea Eroilor ensemble. These two years therefore represent both the construction of the ensemble and Brâncuși’s work on Calea Eroilor in Târgu Jiu.

History

The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie Alexandru Ștefulescu was formally founded on 16 July 1894. The Muzeul Național Constantin Brâncuși is housed in Casa Barbu Gănescu. Constantin Brâncuși stayed in this house. During this time, he worked on the monumental Calea Eroilor ensemble in Târgu Jiu. His work there took place in 1937–1938. The museum promotes the life of the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. It also promotes his work. The focus is on the period when Brâncuși lived and worked in Gorj County. The museum’s objectives include organising temporary exhibitions. These exhibitions present works by Constantin Brâncuși. Thus, the museum’s connection encompasses both the place where he stayed during his working years and the later institutional focus on his life and work.

Collections

The Muzeul Județean Gorj Alexandru Ștefulescu includes a gallery. This gallery presents notable figures from Gorj. The presentation goes back to figures from as early as the 16th century. The museum preserves more than 24,000 objects. These objects relate to the history of Gorj. The Muzeul de Artă houses an extensive collection. It includes paintings and works of art by local artists. Various religious art objects are also part of the holdings. Sculptures are also included in the collection. The Muzeul de Artă – Târgu Jiu is open to visitors from Monday to Sunday. Opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:00. This provides both the different types of objects in the art collection and daily visiting hours from Monday to Sunday.

City Life

The Poarta Sărutului is located at the entrance to Parcul Central. The theatre has had a new auditorium since 26 October 2002. This auditorium is modern. Theatre seasons take place there. Theatre festivals are also held there. Other cultural events also take place in the auditorium.
