Discover Pielești: Culture, Landscape and Holiday Apartments

In 2012, the International Folklore Festival “Vara Pieleșteană” was regarded as an annual event held in Pielești around Pentecost. The Festivalul Floriilor is one of the local events of Pielești Commune and takes place on Palm Sunday. The Festivalul Înfrăţirii prin Cântec şi Joc is associated with Câmpeni in Pielești Commune.

Culture and Events

Within the greater Craiova area, Pielești is one of the communes where elements of folk culture and folk tradition are preserved. The Pielești Commune cultural centre has the “Alunelul” folklore ensemble. The cultural centre was under construction at the time. A Căluș group from Pielești took part in the Alaiul Călușului Oltenesc in Craiova in 2013. Girls also participated in a staged Căluș performance by the group from Pielești in 2013. The events and performances mentioned each relate to different times and places: Palm Sunday is associated with the Festivalul Floriilor, “Vara Pieleșteană” was described as taking place around Pentecost, and the Alaiul Călușului Oltenesc performance took place in Craiova.

Village Museum

The Pielești Village Museum is one of the five culturally and touristically significant destinations of the “History and Tradition in Dolj” project. The museum houses a traditional țest. Its collections also include pots, jugs and bowls. Traditional costumes and photographs are part of the museum collection. A cart is also part of it. A traditional room is located beside a country road and complements the objects and displays in the museum with a separate type of room. An edition of the “Doljul in Bucate” event took place at the Pielești Village Museum.

History

The area of present-day Pielești Commune was already inhabited during the Neolithic period. The settlement is dated to approximately 5000 BC. Archaeological sites are located within the commune. Objects from the Iron Age and the Neolithic period have been found at these sites. The documented history of the commune’s area therefore includes both Neolithic settlement and finds from the later Iron Age.

Landscape and Recreation

Pielești Commune has extensive fields. These fields are separated by deep valleys. In the area of the commune, hills form the riverbed of the Teslui. The hills are 30 to 40 metres high. The Lacul Vlașca fishpond is one of the recreational areas of Pielești Commune. The site covers 10,000 m². It was intended to be developed for tourism. Parcul Central in the village of Pielești is designated as a local recreational area. The park contains a large flower display. This display represents the name of Pielești Commune.

Railway and Location

Railway line 901 crosses Pielești Commune. It runs between Bucharest and Craiova. It was put into operation on 5 January 1875. Pielești railway station is located 2 km south of Pielești. The railway connection and the station are therefore recorded as distinct local features alongside the commune’s landscape and cultural information.
