Danube Floodplain and Nature

The Danube floodplain of Bechet offers visitors floodplain landscapes to explore. The Natura 2000 bird protection area ROSPA 0023 Confluența Jiu – Dunăre is located within the territory of the city of Bechet. Pădurea Bechet Forest is a natural attraction west of the town of Bechet. Picnics and barbecues can be held in the Danube floodplain within the city of Bechet.

Culture at the Muzeul Sătesc

The Muzeul Sătesc Bechet displays ethnographic objects, as well as objects relating to local history and fine art. The museum has seven exhibition rooms dedicated to the subjects of history, textiles, blacksmithing and sheep farming.

The exhibition therefore brings together several areas of local life. History and ethnography are presented alongside fine art; the seven rooms also explicitly include textiles, blacksmithing and sheep farming as subjects.

Church and Roman Fort

The Sf. Gheorghe Church in Bechet was built between 1861 and 1871 on the site of an earlier wooden church, which had been built in 1808. It was constructed in the Byzantine style in the shape of a cross. Bechet Roman Fort is one of the most visited attractions in the city of Bechet.

Two construction phases therefore meet at Sf. Gheorghe: the wooden church built in 1808 was followed by the present building, constructed between 1861 and 1871. Its Byzantine design is linked to its cross shape. The Roman fort is another historic site within the city of Bechet and is one of its most visited attractions.

Folklore and Feast Day

The “Bordeiașul” folklore ensemble from Bechet was founded in 1986 by the now-deceased teacher Victoria Gheorghe at Bechet Theoretical High School. In Bechet, the “Dunărind cu Dunărea” International Folklore Festival was traditionally held every year on 15 August.

Bechet can be reached by car via DN 54A from Corabia, DN 55 from Craiova and DN 55A via Ostroveni and Calafat.
