Landscape and Local History

Geographically, Afumați is located in the plain in southern Romania. The Danube is approximately 20 km away; this approximate distance provides a factual geographical reference point for planning your journey. The two streams Baboia and Balasan flow through the commune. Thus, in addition to the open landscape, two named bodies of water are also part of the local scenery. From 1941 to 1943, Afumați was called Amzulești. The commune's first documented mentions are said to date back to 1618. The local history therefore combines an attested early mention with a much later, time-limited period under a different name.

Church, Monument and Manor Houses

The Orthodox Church of Izvorul Tămăduirii is located in Afumați. It was founded between 1861 and 1863 and consecrated in 1941. Its construction history therefore includes both the founding years and the later consecration date. The Heroes' Monument of Afumați stands in the churchyard. It consists of a tiered pedestal, an obelisk and an eagle. The eagle's wings are half-open. These individual elements give the monument a clearly recognizable, vertically structured form. The manor houses Conac Dinopol, Conac Vorvoreanu and Conac Seulescu were built in 1902, 1904 and 1908, respectively. Conac Vorvoreanu now serves as the town hall. The three manor houses therefore date from different construction years; in the case of Conac Vorvoreanu, its current use as the town hall is also documented.

Rural Culture and Tradition

The Museum of Rural Culture and Civilization in Afumați was founded in 2009. An exhibition of Oltenian carpets was presented at a cultural and culinary event in Afumați in 2018. Some of these carpets were kept in local households. The exhibition thus combined a museum theme with textiles whose storage in local households is also part of the recorded tradition. According to historical accounts, the area's residents produced charcoal in summer. In winter, they transported or sold the charcoal elsewhere. The tradition therefore describes an activity divided by season: production and the subsequent transport or sale are assigned to different seasons.

Festivals and Crafts

“Ropotinul Țestelor” was held in Afumați as a competition for folk dancing and artistic performances. In 2026, Afumați Commune held the tenth edition of its Commune Day. “Ropotinul țăstelor” refers to a day on which housewives made earthenware vessels for the entire year. Bread and meals were prepared in these vessels. The name thus refers to an event associated not only with dancing and artistic performances but also with the traditional production and use of earthenware vessels.
