Coţofenii Din Faţă: Cultural Heritage on the Jiu

Culture and Architectural History

The Ansamblul Curții Coțofenilor dates from the mid-18th century and is an example of residential architecture from Wallachia. The ensemble includes the Casa Coțofenilor and the park. The site therefore combines several buildings and a historic outdoor space, whose individual components date from different periods.

The Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului“ dates from 1827. The Conac neoromânesc and the Casa neoclasică each date from the early 20th century. Alongside the original ensemble, buildings from later periods are therefore also central to the history of the locality. Their names refer to different architectural forms, while the dates make the chronological development of the locality visible.

The Școala veche dates from the mid-20th century. It supplements the historic buildings with another structure from the more recent history of the locality. The documented architectural history of Coţofenii Din Faţă thus extends from the 18th century through the 19th and early 20th centuries to the mid-20th century.

Historical Connections

Queen Marie of Romania was a guest in the houses of the Ansamblul Curții Coțofenilor in the 1930s. This stay is part of the history of the Casa Coțofenilor and the ensemble’s other houses. The buildings therefore represent not only a succession of different construction periods, but also a specific historical connection to the Romanian queen.

The Conacul Coțofeanu served as a filming location for the film „Tănase Scatiu“ in the 1970s. This film connection adds a link to Romanian film history to the political and architectural history. It belongs to a different period from Queen Marie’s visit and identifies the Conacul as an independent component of the locality’s history.

Location on the Jiu

The Ansamblul Curții Coțofenilor is located on the riverbank slope of the Jiu. Its riverside location is part of the description of the historic ensemble of Coţofenii Din Faţă.

Coţofenii din Față is located on DE 70 along the Craiova–Timișoara route. The road connection places the locality on a regionally significant route between Craiova and Timișoara. Together with its location on the riverbank slope of the Jiu, this provides two distinct geographical references: the immediate river area and the named route through the locality.

Local Character

Beharca was known for several years for guesthouses serving traditional Romanian cuisine. This local connection includes both the guesthouses and the traditional Romanian cuisine, as well as the period of several years. The culinary character is explicitly associated with Beharca, not with each individual building in the historic ensemble.
