Lacul Bistreț serves as a refuge for birds migrating along the Danube. It covers 1,936 hectares and is considered a reference area for the protection of migratory birds. In 2007, it was granted the status of a special protection area for birds, and in 2012, the status of a Ramsar site.

Nature

The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0045 “Coridorul Jiului” stretches along the lower reaches of the Jiu and was designated in 2007 by an order of the Minister of the Environment.

An educational thematic nature trail has been established in the Pădurea Zăval nature reserve.

Craiova Zoo opened in 1906 and is considered one of the oldest zoos in Romania. It is home to 39 species, with a total of 244 birds and animals.

The Botanical Garden in Craiova covers 17 hectares and has a museum with seed and fruit specimens, display panels, graphics, diplomas, and catalog collections.

Culture

The Muzeul Olteniei Craiova was founded on April 1, 1915. It operates four buildings housing the departments of history and archaeology, natural sciences, and ethnography, as well as a restoration and conservation laboratory.

The Palatul Marincu in Calafat was built between 1905 and 1907 by Ștefan Marincu in memory of his daughter, Marioara Marincu. The plans were drawn up by Paul Gottereau, and the construction work was supervised by Constantin Rogalski. The Palatul Marincu combines French Neoclassicism with Baroque and Rococo accents, as well as influences from Romanian architecture of the early 20th century.

The Cula Cernăteștilor was converted into a museum in 1972 and houses exhibits documenting the local past. In the settlement of Cula Cernăteștilor, the first fortified building was erected in 1600 by the merchant Dimitrie Cernat.

The Casa Memorială Amza Pellea in Băilești was opened to the public on April 7, 2024. It features an exhibition commemorating the actor Amza Pellea, with objects donated by his daughter, the actress Oana Pellea.

History

In 2016, the Dolj County Council decided to establish the county’s first tourist route under the title “Istorie și tradiție doljeană”.

The Cula Izvoranu-Geblescu probably dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Its opening hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; it is listed as closed on Mondays.
