Discover Moroeni: Karst, Gorges and Trails

In the municipality of Moroeni, in the upper Ialomița area, lies Cheile Tătarului, a geological, natural and palaeontological reserve of national importance. The upper Ialomița Valley within the municipality of Moroeni is characterised by karst relief. There are nine sections of gorges carved by the Ialomița River.

Hiking

The themed trail Lacul Scropoasa – Cheile Zanoagei – Zanoaga is 2.51 km long, takes about 1.5 hours and has a moderate difficulty level. The themed trail Turbaria Laptici is 0.56 km long, takes about 25 minutes and is classified as easy. The themed trail Padina – Peștera – Cascada Doamnele – Drumul Grănicerilor – Saua Strunga – Padina is 15.99 km long, takes about six hours and is classified as moderate to difficult. Thus, the described trail network includes both the area around Lacul Scropoasa and Cheile Zanoagei, Turbaria Laptici and the named stations of the long Padina circuit.

Nature

The Peștera-Cocora Nature Reserve includes the Bătrâna–Peștera Ialomiței karst system. Peștera Rătei consists of meandering passages on three levels. One level is active, while two levels are fossil. With a length of approximately 8,000 m and an elevation difference of +67 m, it is considered the most important endokarst phenomenon in the Bucegi Mountains. Turbăria Lăptici is one of 14 nature reserves in Bucegi Nature Park and the highest-altitude bog in Romania. Peștera Ialomiței is 1,128 m long in total; 450 m of it has been prepared for visits. The natural features therefore range from the karst relief and carved gorges of the upper valley to different types of caves and the bog area in Bucegi Nature Park.

Winter sports

The alpine ski slope Piciorul Cocora is located on the Bucegi Plateau in the municipality of Moroeni. The slope is 3,550 m long and 30 m wide; it has an elevation difference of 561 and a gradient of 16%. These figures describe both its length and width, elevation difference and gradient.

Culture

The first wooden hermitage of Mănăstirea Peștera Ialomiței is located at the entrance to Peștera Ialomiței. It is attributed to the voivode Mihnea Vodă cel Rău (1508–1509). The Mănăstirea Peștera Ialomiței monastery is located at an altitude of 1,600 m. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Bucegi Mountains. The cultural classification thus links the wooden hermitage at the cave entrance with the later-mentioned monastery location at an altitude of 1,600 m and the historical attribution to Mihnea Vodă cel Rău.

Transport connections

The county road DJ 130 Glod–Peștera is approximately 42 km long. From the municipality of Moroeni, this road provides access to mountain huts and tourist destinations in the Bucegi Massif. The municipality of Moroeni is connected to the railway network and the Pietroșița–Titu–Bucharest line via the municipality of Pietroșița. The transport connections therefore include both the county road linking Glod with Peștera and access from Moroeni to destinations in the Bucegi Massif, as well as the railway connection via Pietroșița.
