Fieni: Churches, Industrial History and Peaks

The history of the Fieni cement factory began in 1914. It is considered the oldest cement factory still in operation in Romania. The Muzeul Cimentului is located inside the cement factory.

Culture and History

In the centre of Fieni stands the monument to the heroes of the First World War. It is a war memorial. The monument depicts an eagle with outstretched wings standing on a sphere. Two cannons flank the monument to the heroes of the First World War.

The stone cross at Strada Biserica „Sf. Nicolae“ 6 stands in the courtyard of Fieni’s old church. It is listed as a historic monument dating from 1660. The rural ensemble on Strada Mică includes house numbers 1–7 and 2–8 and is listed as a historic ensemble dating from 1901 to 1950. The Întreprinderea „Steaua Electrică“ at Strada Gării 2 in Fieni is listed as a historic monument dating from 1937.

The first document considered Fieni’s birth certificate dates from 1532. At the Valea Caselor site in Fieni are remains of walls considered to be traces of fortifications. The Izlaz archaeological site lies north-northwest of Fieni at an altitude of 600 m and is a settlement from the Early Bronze Age.

The church in Fieni with the triple dedication to Saint Nicholas, Saint Paraskeva and Saint Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer dates from 1804 and is designated a historic monument. The church dedicated to the “Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple” in Fieni’s Costeşti district dates from 1831.

Fieni railway station lies on the Bucharest–Titu–Târgovişte–Pucioasa–Fieni–Pietroşiţa railway line. This railway line was inaugurated on 12 November 1912. The historic Fieni–Lespezi funicular railway began operating in 1941, was 27 kilometres long, rested on 168 concrete supports and was considered the longest route of its kind in Romania.

Landscape

Fieni lies at the point where the Ialomiţa Subcarpathians meet the southern foothills of the Bucegi Mountains. The town lies on the interfluve between the Ialomicioara and Ialomiţa rivers. The area around Fieni is considered a Subcarpathian zone; breccia limestone, sandstone, sand and various types of marl occur there.

The peaks of Stiubeiul, Orlea, Cucuteanca and Maguri lie in the area around Fieni.
