Tuzla on the Black Sea: Beach, Nature and History

Tuzla Beach is considered an almost untouched beach with a natural atmosphere.

Coast and Nature

Along the southern shoreline of the UAT Tuzla lies the 1,738-hectare marine protected area ROSCI 0273 Zona marină de la Capul Tuzla. Its rocky reef bed extends furthest out to sea and has the most diverse and rugged relief in the Romanian section of the Black Sea. The headland of Capul Tuzla is located in the vicinity of Tuzla.

The coast is also associated with prominent historical points of reference. The Tuzla Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on the Romanian coast. The Tuzla–Far/Stratonis archaeological site lies 50–150 metres south of the Tuzla Lighthouse on the seashore and approximately 2 kilometres east of the village of Tuzla. The lighthouse and archaeological site are located in a narrowly defined coastal section, with the site additionally identified through its relationship to the village of Tuzla.

History and Culture

A mosque in Tuzla was built in 1860 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Its minaret dates from 1926. The years 1860 and 1926 mark the chronological sequence of the mosque's construction and the minaret's creation.

Tuzla is also home to the Sfânta Ecaterina Church, which was endowed in 1884 by Mihail Kogălniceanu and his brother Vasile. The 1884 endowment adds another historical reference in the town alongside the mosque's construction dates.

The wider vicinity of Tuzla also leads to independent religious and landscape destinations. The Mânăstirea Sfânta Elena de la Mare Monastery and the Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul Church are located in the vicinity of Tuzla. The Geamia Giuma Techirghiol Mosque is located in the area around Tuzla. Thus, in addition to the buildings in the town, destinations with different spatial relationships also form part of Tuzla's cultural environment.

Surroundings

In the wider regional surroundings of Tuzla is the Muzeul Militar Naţional Filiala Constanţa Museum. The Acvariul Constanţa and Delfinariu zoo facilities, as well as Zoom Beach, are also located in the wider regional surroundings. The museum represents a military-historical subject area; Acvariul and Delfinariu belong to a different thematic field. The museum, zoo facilities and beach broaden the thematic scope beyond the immediate coast and nearby destinations without losing their own connection to Tuzla.

Other places in the regional context include Sibioara, Lazu, 23 August, Cap Aurora, Cumpăna, Seimeni, Techirghiol and Ostrov.

Getting Around

Amateur fishing continues to be practised in Tuzla. A cross-regional connection is provided by the “Black Sea Route” stage from Constanța to Costinești, which passes through Techirghiol and Tuzla. The sequence of stages thus names the two places Techirghiol and Tuzla between Constanța and Costinești.
