Lazu: Church Architecture, Roman Settlements and Beaches in the Surrounding Area
Culture and History
In Lazu stands the parish church “ÎnălțareaDomnului”. The sacred building was constructed from 1993 to 1999 and has a cruciform floor plan. An octagonal tower rises above the naos, while two smaller towers stand above the pronaos. The construction period, floor plan and arrangement of the towers give the church several clearly recognisable architectural features.
At the north-western edge of Lazu, immediately north of the cemetery, lies the Late Antique Roman-Byzantine settlement “Aşezarea romano-bizantină de la Lazu - Lazu NV/Cumpăna Est”. Another Roman settlement from the 2nd to 3rd century AD is located approximately 1.2 kilometres south-west of Lazu in the Derea Valley. Near Agigea there is also a group of burial mounds approximately 500 metres south-east of Lazu and around 200 metres west of Lake Agigea. The archaeological remains are therefore distributed across the north-western edge of the village, the Derea Valley and the area south-east of the lake.
The Muzeul Militar Naţional Filiala Constanţa is a museum in the immediate vicinity of Lazu. The Muzeul Marinei Române Constanţa and the Muzeul de Artă Populară are also located in the surrounding area. The Expoziţia de Păsări Exotice şi de Decor Constanţa, a museum, is likewise nearby. The Acvariul Constanţa is a zoo in the vicinity of Lazu; the Delfinariu is also a zoo in this area. Thus, alongside the church building and archaeological sites, several museums and zoos stand as independent cultural and leisure attractions.
For museum visits, the respective opening hours are part of practical daily planning. For exhibitions and zoos, current times, special event dates or deviations from regular opening days can be checked before visiting. The Roman settlements and burial mounds, on the other hand, are characterised by their different historical periods and geographical contexts.
Nature and Beaches
A 25-hectare nature reserve with sea dunes is located in the municipality of Agigea. The Stațiunea Biologică Marină „Prof. Dr. Ioan Borcea“ Agigea offers the public a themed educational trail on the unique plant and animal communities in the Dunele Marine de la Agigea nature reserve. Sea dunes as well as plant and animal communities form the subjects of this educational trail. For a visit to an educational trail, current opening hours and any possible time restrictions can be checked before travelling.
Two beaches are also located in the vicinity of Lazu: Zoom Beach and Celsius Beach. For days at the beach, current weather and route conditions should be taken into account before setting off.
