Cumpăna: Culture and Landscape of Dobruja

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, the municipality of Cumpăna hosted the 16th edition of the multicultural event “Conviețuire Interetnică pe Plaiuri Dobrogene”, where visitors could learn about the traditions of multicultural Dobruja. A traditional parade of folk costumes was part of the programme, as was the “Hora Prieteniei Etniilor Dobrogene” at the Cumpăna Civic Centre.

Cuisine

The event includes a traditional cooking competition. The participating communities present typical dishes. These recipes are passed down through generations and preserved as part of the respective ethnic community’s cultural heritage. At the Festivalul Șuberecului, Șuberek took centre stage in local and interethnic cuisine. The traditional Turkish dish is regarded as a symbol of living together.

The culinary programme therefore brings together contributions from several communities: their typical dishes represent not only individual recipes, but also their transmission across generations and the preserved cultural heritage of the respective ethnic community. Șuberek forms a separately named focus within local and interethnic cuisine.

Landscape

Cumpăna lies on a watershed. The average elevation is around 62 metres. The relief of the area forms a plateau, the Topraisar Plateau. This plateau has the character of a gently undulating plain cut through by narrow, dry valleys.

The approximate elevation describes Cumpăna’s location, while the Topraisar Plateau refers to the form of the relief. The landscape therefore includes both the watershed as a geographical location and the undulating plain with its narrow, dry valleys.

The general drainage direction of the valleys runs from west to east. A small spring rises east of the village. It flows through a narrow valley called Derea. The Constanța–Negru Vodă national road is the access route to Cumpăna.

Culture

The Muzeul Satului is furnished as a traditional farmhouse. Its facilities include a kitchen, a parlour, and a sleeping chamber. The museum displays authentic folk costumes and has a century-old dowry chest dating from 1912.

The furnishings combine living areas with preserved household items: the kitchen, parlour, and sleeping chamber illustrate the layout of the farmhouse, while the folk costumes and the 1912 dowry chest are additional parts of the museum.

The Muzeul Satului also includes a corner for prayer and reflection. It contains four old icons and a silver oil lamp beneath a hand-embroidered cloth in traditional colours.

History

The monument to those who fell in the Second World War was inaugurated on 23 August 1975. It lists the names of 23 fallen heroes. The monument to those who fell in the First World War in Cumpăna was erected in 1919. It commemorates the local soldiers who lost their lives in the campaign from 1916 to 1918.

The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church was built between 1924 and 1928. The “Cuvioasa Parascheva” Church was consecrated on 14 October 2001.

Cultural Route

As part of Via DobroGetica, a milestone is to be erected in the park in front of the Cumpăna Cultural Centre. Cumpăna is to be included in the cultural route dedicated to the history, values, and identity of Dobruja.
