Lipnița – Monasteries, Danube Shore and Historic Sites
According to local tradition, the first settlement of Lipnița was established near what is now Lake Iormac. Reeds and water for livestock were available there. In November 2004, the Sf. Ioan Botezătorul Monastery was founded in Lipniţa. It is located on national road DN3 between the Sfântul Apostol Andrei and Dervent monasteries.
Culture and History
The Păcuiul lui Soare Fortress was built in 971–972. Its builders were the Byzantines. The structure served as a naval base. As a Byzantine fortress, Păcuiul lui Soare is located on a Danube island near the Dervent area. Păcuiul lui Soare is approximately 9 km upstream from Sucidava Pârjoaia/Izvoarele.
The fortress thus combines a clearly identified Byzantine period of construction with its function as a naval base. Its geographical setting includes both the Danube island and the nearby Dervent area. The distance given remains an approximate point of reference: Păcuiul lui Soare lies approximately 9 km upstream from Sucidava Pârjoaia/Izvoarele.
The church of “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Dumitru” stands in Izvoarele. It is a category A historic monument. It was built in the mid-19th century, certainly before 1860–1870. The church is a so-called “sunken” church without a tower or foundation. The floor of the altar area lies below the outside ground level. Its walls consist of woven branches with clay applied between them.
Several distinctive construction features come together in the church in Izvoarele. Its classification as a category A historic monument stands alongside its dating to the mid-19th century and the certain limitation to a period before 1860–1870. The description as a “sunken” church refers to the unusual position of the altar floor below the outside ground level. Without a tower or foundation, the structure also differs significantly from many familiar church forms. The walls are constructed in their own distinctive way as well: woven branches form the framework, with clay between them.
