Mangalia: Callatis, Sulphur Springs and Harbour
History
The Callatis Archaeological Museum in Mangalia presents a permanent exhibition with approximately 4,000 objects. It includes the Papyrus Tomb, which dates from the 4th century BC, has been restored and is preserved as part of the permanent exhibition. The papyrus found in the Papyrus Tomb is considered the only artefact of its kind discovered in Romania and the oldest papyrus in Europe. The museum's archaeological range therefore extends from an extensive collection to a single, extraordinary find.
The ancient city of Callatis was founded at the end of the 6th century BC by Dorian colonists from Heracleea Pontică. A section of a Roman-Byzantine quarter of Callatis, which developed from the 4th to the 7th century, has been preserved beneath the President Hotel in Mangalia. The ruins of Callatis include the Syrian Basilica, a Christian religious building unique in Dobruja. The Roman-Byzantine development therefore dates clearly later than the founding of the ancient city.
The Esmahan Sultan Mosque is located on Oituz Street on the edge of the ancient city of Callatis. In Mangalia, it is considered Romania's oldest Muslim place of worship and was built in 1575. It is also a stop on the historic city tour of Mangalia. Historic buildings complement museum visits with tangible sites in the cityscape.

Culture
The Mangalia Marine Museum displays navigation and maritime cultural heritage objects in two exhibition rooms and a themed library. The maritime collection thus combines navigation-related items with other objects of maritime cultural heritage. The two museums focus on different areas: Callatis is dedicated to the ancient city and its finds, while the Marine Museum focuses on navigation and maritime cultural heritage. The current opening hours of museums and libraries should be checked before visiting. Another cultural event in 2026 was the 22nd edition of the International Festival of Light Music and Folklore, “Festivalul Tinereții”, which Mangalia hosted. Festival dates should be checked before travelling, as the edition mentioned relates to 2026.
Nature
Mangalia is a seaside resort with mineral, sulphur and mesothermal springs. The sulphur-bearing aquifer ecosystem includes sulphur springs on land in Mangalia and the surrounding area, as well as underwater sulphur springs on the bed of the Black Sea. The springs in this system are therefore located both on land and underwater, with the geographical reference extending from Mangalia and its surroundings to the seabed.
Water
Mangalia Beach is part of the cultural tourism route of Constanța County. In Mangalia's sulphur groundwater system, the shallow underwater sulphur springs at depths of 0 to 25 metres are accessible by scuba diving and snorkelling. The beach and underwater springs thus represent two clearly distinct aspects of the coastal area.
Mangalia Tourist Harbour is a starting point for yacht trips. Boat tours on the sea are possible from Mangalia Tourist Harbour, as are fishing trips. Current times for boat tours and fishing trips can be checked in advance.
