Techirghiol – Spa Town on the Salt Lake

Techirghiol combines the history of a spa town with the unusual character of a highly saline lake. The town has been known as a spa resort since 1899. That year, a maritime asylum with beds and facilities for mud baths was inaugurated. Lake Techirghiol is Romania’s largest salt lake by surface area. It is 7,500 metres long, up to 9 metres deep and has a salinity of more than 90 g/l.

Spa Treatments and Water

The Sanatorium Balnear și de Recuperare Techirghiol offers balneophysical treatments for inpatients in its three departments, as well as outpatient treatments. The history of the spa therefore extends from the facilities for mud baths to today’s balneophysical treatments. For exercise in the water, Piscina Techirghiol also has a swimming pool measuring 50 metres long and 25 metres wide. A children’s pool with three water slides is located in the immediate vicinity. When using a swimming pool, current opening hours are part of the usual daily planning; the applicable times should be checked before travelling. Nature and Lakeshore

The Natura 2000 site Lacul Techirghiol covers areas in Techirghiol and in the neighbouring municipalities of 23 August, Eforie, Topraisar and Tuzla on the Black Sea coast. Its area therefore extends beyond the town limits and includes several places in the nearby coastal surroundings.

Plaja Minerva beach is located between Techirghiol and Eforie Nord and covers an area of 14,000 m². The beach has three lifeguard stations, three changing rooms, three sanitary facilities with showers and two first-aid stations. The facilities are complemented by a pedestrian promenade and a cycle path more than two kilometres long. Parcul Faleza Techirghiol is also located by the lake, a park on the lakeside promenade with its own cycle path. For cycling trips, current information about the route and conditions before setting off is also a sensible planning consideration in addition to the designated paths. Culture and History

The wooden church of the Sfânta Maria Monastery in Techirghiol was built in the 18th century by the village community from Maiorești in Mureș County. A wooden church was brought to the Sfânta Maria Monastery in Techirghiol in 1951. The building has preserved its complete painted decoration.

The German Church of Techirghiol was completed in 1934. Pastor Pieger, the leader of the German community formed by the Germans of Dobruja, contributed to its construction.
