Drumul Carului – Fortress, peaks and regional culture

The Roman fortress “Castellum de epocă romană de la Drumul Carului - La Cetate” is located in Drumul Carului at La Cetate (Grădişte). Its site is situated on a high plateau at an altitude of 1,095 metres near the E 574 European road. The name of the fortress combines the place name Drumul Carului with La Cetate (Grădişte) and at the same time refers to the Roman era of the complex. The elevation on the high plateau is just as much part of the described location as its proximity to the E 574 European road.

Culture and history

Those interested in prehistoric structures will find the fortification “Fortificaţia preistorică de la Drumul Carului - La Cetăţuie” in Drumul Carului. It is classified as a defensive system. Alongside the Roman fortress, the village therefore has another named fortification from an earlier era. The two structures have different Romanian names and each represents its own historical classification. While the fortress already bears its Roman association in its name, the second structure is associated with its prehistoric designation and its classification as a defensive system.

Landscape

The La Chisatoare waterfall is located in the vicinity of Drumul Carului. The Pesterei, Cremenele and Coarbei peaks are also located nearby. The names Pesterei, Cremenele and Coarbei each remain independent destinations; they are not combined into a single landscape designation. Thus, the named landscape destinations in the surrounding area include both a waterfall and three individual peaks.

The Mânăstire Predeal monastery is located in the wider regional surroundings of Drumul Carului. The Biserica Poiana Mărului church is also located in the surrounding area. If you would like to explore Drumul Carului by bicycle, the Cetatea Carului guesthouse has a bicycle rental service operated by FUNsy Bike. FUNsy Bike offers the Sirnea–Ciocanu cycling tour starting from Drumul Carului. The tour name Sirnea–Ciocanu remains a separate designation alongside the bicycle rental service. The village therefore has a named bicycle rental service and a cycling tour with its own name. The rental service is located at the Cetatea Carului guesthouse, while the tour is offered from Drumul Carului.

Customs and crafts

A cultural centre in Drumul Carului enabled visitors to see and learn about authentic Romanian customs. There, it also offered workshops in stained glass, egg decoration, wood carving, spinning and weaving, as well as mountain hikes as a group activity. The workshops therefore cover various craft topics: stained glass, egg decoration, wood carving, spinning and weaving. As an additional group activity, the cultural centre offered mountain hikes.
