Făgăraş Fortress is considered one of the largest and best-preserved monuments in Romania and Europe.

History

Its construction began at the end of the 14th century and continued through successive extensions until the middle of the 17th century. In the 15th century, the fortress had four bastion towers at the corners and an outpost tower on the eastern side.

The construction history of the fortress therefore covers a period from the end of the 14th century to the middle of the 17th century. In the 15th century, the fortress included four bastion towers at the corners and an additional outpost tower on the eastern side. It is precisely the combination of construction phases and individual fortification elements that anchors the fortress in the long history of Făgăraș.

Culture

The “Valer Literat” Museum of the Făgăraș Region was founded in 1923 on the basis of the ethnographic collection of Professor Valeriu Literat. It brings together history, ethnography and art and includes, among other things, archaeological, military history, folkloric, religious-artistic and craft collections. The permanent exhibition is divided into the history of the Făgăraș Region, the ethnography of the Olt Country and the Virgil Fulicea Sculpture Gallery.

The museum thus brings together regional history, the ethnographic heritage of the Olt Country and visual art. The collections mentioned range from archaeological finds and military history holdings to folkloric and religious-artistic pieces and craft objects. Within the permanent exhibition, the Virgil Fulicea Sculpture Gallery forms a separate section alongside regional history and ethnography.

Churches

The Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas was founded by the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu and his wife Maria. It is considered the oldest religious building in Făgăraș and was built in 1697–1698. The original iconostasis is carved from oak in the Brâncovenesc style and covered with gold leaf.

The Reformed Church in Făgăraș contains a stone pulpit decorated with flowers, leaves and wreaths. The surrounding area of Făgăraș also contains the churches Biserica Ortodoxă Sfânta Parascheva, Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Gheorghe, Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului and Biserica Ludişor.

The Church of Saint Nicholas therefore bears several historical characteristics: its foundation is attributed to the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu and Maria, and its construction dates to 1697–1698. The iconostasis also preserves an artistic and craft-related distinctive feature through its oak wood, Brâncovenesc style and gold leaf. This ecclesiastical picture is complemented by the decorated stone pulpit of the Reformed Church.

Geographical Setting

Făgăraș lies in the central northern part of the depression of the same name. The depression is bordered by the Făgăraș Mountains, the Perșani Mountains and the Olt River. Făgăraș is also situated on national road DN1 between Brașov and Sibiu.

Făgăraș’s location connects the depression of the same name with a route between Brașov and Sibiu described by national road DN1. The geographical setting of the town therefore includes both the three bordering landscape elements and its location in the central northern part of the depression.

Landscape

The Dealul Netotului hill is located in the surroundings of Făgăraș. In the wider regional area around Făgăraș are the peaks of Runcu, Pietriceaua and Vârful Chiciuni.

The landscape references are arranged from the immediate surroundings to the wider regional area: the Dealul Netotului hill is assigned to the surroundings of Făgăraș, while Runcu, Pietriceaua and Vârful Chiciuni lie in the wider regional area.

Other places in the same destination are listed in compact succession: Sâmbăta De Sus, Ghimbav, Vama Buzăului, Cincșor, Victoria, Deutsch-Weißkirch, Drumul Carului and Șirnea.

Event

The seventh edition of the traditional costume festival “FĂGĂRAȘ, FOAIE DE CEAPĂ!” was announced for 26 July 2024.

The announced date is therefore part of the time-specific event information for Făgăraș: both the date, 26 July 2024, and the seventh edition of the traditional costume festival “FĂGĂRAȘ, FOAIE DE CEAPĂ!” are specified. The wording describes an announcement, not an event that has already concluded.
