Bran: Castle, Museum and Carpathian Landscape

History

Bran Fortress was built at the end of the 14th century. Strategically, it controls the pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. Bran Castle became Queen Marie’s preferred residence on 1 December 1920. The people of Brașov had offered it to her. Worldwide, Bran Castle is known as “Dracula’s Castle” because it corresponds to Bram Stoker’s description. This means that the building brings together a medieval pass location, royal use and its literary designation.

Museum and Traditions

The core collections of the Bran National Museum come from the royal collections of Bran Castle. The museum presents its collections in the “Regina Maria” history department. An open-air ethnographic department is also part of this presentation. The exhibition therefore covers both the history of the royal residence and ethnographic content in the open air. The “Zestrea Branului” folklore ensemble preserves Bran traditions through authentic clothing, songs and dances. The Adormirea Maicii Domnului Church in the village of Bran dates from 1826 and complements the town’s historical evidence with a religious building.

Nature

Piatra Craiului National Park is located in the Southern Carpathians. Its territory includes the entire Piatra Craiului Ridge. The park also covers parts of the neighbouring Rucăr–Bran and Rucăr–Zărnești corridors. The landscape designation therefore refers not only to the ridge itself, but also to the two adjoining corridors.

The Time Tunnel

The Time Tunnel is regarded as a former secret passage and is now a gallery of history and imagination. In 1937, the Czech architect Karel Liman connected the well shaft to a horizontal gallery. His aim was to build a vertical lift. This provided direct access from the Royal Park to Bran Castle. The construction thus connects the well shaft, the horizontal gallery and the vertical lift in a clearly defined sequence. Today, the Time Tunnel uses modern multimedia technology for its presentation. It tells visitors stories about the people and myths of Bran Castle.

Getting There

If you are travelling from Brașov, Bus Station No. 2 offers regular connections to Bran–Moieciu. The buses run every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends. The bus station in Bran is located in the centre of the village. It is near the main entrance to Bran Castle. The connection therefore specifies both the departure point in Brașov, the timetable and the location of the destination bus station.
