Șercaia between the Olt, daffodils and living tradition

Șercaia combines riverside landscapes, historic churches and vibrant local traditions. The village lies at the confluence of the Șercaia River and the Olt. Between natural features and cultural traces, a varied picture emerges, ranging from the daffodil landscape to the art of decorated Easter eggs.

Nature and water

North of the village of Șercaia and south of the village of Hălmeag, the Olt flows for approximately 7.5 kilometres through the territory of Șercaia commune. The river course is therefore just as much a part of the local landscape as the confluence of the Șercaia River and the Olt, where Șercaia is located.

A distinctive natural area is Dumbrava Vadului, also known as Poiana cu Narcise. The area covers approximately 400 hectares. Thousands of daffodils of the species Narcissus stellarus grow among loosely spaced oak trees. The watercourse, confluence and daffodil meadow represent different landscapes within the commune.

Routes through the commune

The single-track Brașov–Sibiu railway line crosses the territory of Șercaia commune from east to west for approximately 11 kilometres. There are two stations for passenger transport: Gara Șercaia and Halta Șercaia. One of the two stations also handles freight traffic.

By road, National Road 73A connects Șercaia with Râșnov. 5.2 kilometres of this road run through the territory of Șercaia commune.

Churches and local history

The Evangelical vicarage in Șercaia is dated to the period 1839–1840. The Evangelical vicarage complex includes a bell tower whose construction phases are dated to 1691 and 1819. The Evangelical church in Șercaia is dated to the period 1868–1875 and is under the patronage of Saint Catherine.

Other religious buildings mark different historical periods: the Orthodox Sf. Nicolae Church in Șercaia is dated to 1928, while the Greek Catholic Sf. Gheorghe Church is dated to 1793. In Sf. Gheorghe, the sky-blue painted ceiling, decorated with golden stars, also stands out.

The Colecția Muzeală de Etnografie și Istorie Locală is housed in the Centrul Social-Cultural „Sf. Nicolae“ in Șercaia. The churches, vicarage complex and museum thus bring together different forms of architectural, local and everyday history.

Traditions and events

Decorating Easter eggs – “închistritul” or “împistritul” – is a long-standing tradition and art in Șercaia. Girls and women learn it within the family or from particularly skilled people. The custom is not merely passed down: several women in Șercaia currently master and practise this art.

Children’s workshops were held at the Centrul social-cultural al bisericii „Sfântul Nicolae“ in Șercaia, where they were introduced to the art of decorating eggs. Since 2001, the Festivalul narciselor has taken place every year in Șercaia commune on the Sunday closest to 21 May.

The museum programme for 2025 ended with a șezătoare, where traditional dishes and Plăcinte were sampled. Also in 2025, the event Noaptea Muzeelor la Sate was celebrated for the third consecutive time.
