Recea: Trails into the Făgăraș Mountains, Churches and Ceata de feciori

Recea combines trails into the Făgăraș Mountains with a long local history, religious buildings and the revived tradition of Ceata de feciori. For active days, a route to Curmătura Brătilei on the ridge of the Făgăraș Mountains is a highlight: From Recea, it leads via Dejani and takes approximately six to seven hours. The access road runs from Făgăraș via Recea and Dejani to a junction. The county road DJ104C is also important for access in this area, connecting Făgăraș, Săsciori, Recea and Dejani.

Nature

Another hiking route is called Recea–Piciorul Bătrân–Culmea Scoarța. It begins with approximately two kilometres on the forest road in Valea Berivoi and then climbs onto a wooded ridge. The transition from the forest road to the ridge defines the course of this route. Several named peaks are also located around Recea: Runcu, Tutrtani Baba, Pietriceaua and Hoanca. Thus, both a longer route to the ridge of the Făgăraș Mountains and a shorter section described through Valea Berivoi are among the landscapes associated with Recea.

For hikes with an approximate duration, current route conditions and the time available are part of the usual preparation. The change between forest road and wooded ridge also makes it advisable to check the respective route based on current conditions before setting out.

History and Churches

Recea was first documented in 1486. In Recea Nouă stands the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The church is 26 metres long and 11 metres wide, while its tower is 30 metres high. The Church of Saints Michael and Gabriel is considered one of the important churches in Țara Făgărașului.

The religious sites in the area around Recea also include Sambata Monastery and the Mânăstirea Ortodoxă Brâncoveanu Monastery. The Biserica Pojorta and Biserica Lisa churches are also located in the area. Local history, a church with precisely described dimensions, and several monasteries and churches therefore stand alongside one another as different cultural points of interest.

Tradition

The tradition of Ceata de feciori is part of the local culture. In Recea, it was revived after a six-year interruption. The programme included traditional dances and balls at the Recea cultural centre; these events were open to the entire community. During the winter holidays, members of Ceata de feciori were to walk through Recea and announce the birth of Christ.
