Beiuș: Churches, Thermal Water and Apuseni Destinations

Beiuș is considered the most important starting point from the west for the tourist areas of the Apuseni Mountains. These include the Padiș karst plateau, the Bear Cave near Chișcău, Stâna de Vale and Vârtop–Arieșeni.

Getting there

The 26.16-kilometre county road section DJ 764A between Beiuș and Stâna de Vale is part of the Drumul Apusenilor. The Bihor County section of the Drumul Apusenilor is 56.3 kilometres long in total and comprises three county road sections. Beiuș can be reached by road, rail or air; Oradea Airport is approximately 70 kilometres away, while Cluj-Napoca Airport is approximately 148 kilometres away. Road journeys should be planned before travelling based on the current route conditions.

Culture

Beiuș's Roman Catholic church stands in the central park. It is the oldest of the city's churches that still exist today and was built in 1752. The Biserica din deal was built in 1784 to replace a wooden chapel. The Baroque hall church has a single tower on the central axis and is considered the oldest local place of worship in Beiuș. The Catedrala – Protopopiat Beiuș houses a depot containing 1,500 ecclesiastical objects. The Reformed church of the Parohia Episcopia reformată de pe lângă Piatra Craiului in Beiuș dates from 1780 to 1782. The city's central church was built between 1786 and 1790 and held the status of a second church with cathedral rank in the Greek Catholic Diocese of Oradea.

Nature

The thermal baths of Beiuș are supplied by a borehole. Beiuș has geothermal water and a bioclimate that can have a positive effect on spa treatments. Both banks of the Nimăiești Valley in Beiuș have been developed as promenades. In Bihor County, 11 hiking trails are designated in the spa and holiday region of Stâna de Vale, and 27 hiking trails in the Padiș–Vârtop tourist area. Before travelling, hikers must check the current trail conditions and transport timetables. Thermal baths have opening hours that should be checked before visiting.

Events

The Thursday market in Beiuș is considered a centuries-old tradition of the inhabitants of the Beiuș area. Farmers and craftspeople from this area offer agricultural produce and handmade products there. The Târgul Meșterilor Populari takes place in April on the weekend closest to St George's Day on 23 April. The programme includes presentations of folk traditions and the participation of traditional costume makers and other craftspeople from the region. The national festival “Cântă, cântă, gură scumpă” is held annually in November. It brings together Romanian folk music performers and includes a folk singing competition. The Toamnă Beiușană festival also takes place annually, on the third weekend of October. Events follow specific dates; these should be checked again before arrival.
