Nucet at the Foot of the Munții Bihor

At the foot of the Munții Bihor, the Nucet area offers numerous mountain hiking trails. The trails range from easy forest walks to challenging ascents to the highest peaks of the Apuseni Mountains.

Hiking

The challenging Şaua Vârtop–Vârful Cucurbăta Mare hiking trail is 14 kilometers long as a circular route, takes six to seven hours, reaches an altitude of 1,849 meters, and is marked with a red bar. The moderately difficult Băița–Şaua Vârtop hiking trail is 11 kilometers long, takes four to five hours, and is marked with a blue triangle. The easy hiking trail to Groapa Ruginoasă covers 5 kilometers, takes two to three hours, and is marked with a yellow cross.

This provides hiking options of varying lengths for a day of walking, with clearly designated difficulty levels and distinct markings. The shorter route to Groapa Ruginoasă is specified as taking two to three hours, while the circular route via Şaua Vârtop and Vârful Cucurbăta Mare takes six to seven hours.

In Vârtop, there is the Pietrele Negre via ferrata, rated difficulty level B. The Satul de Vacanță Vârtop also has five officially certified tourist hiking trails.

Nature

The Nucet–Vârtop tourist area is partly located within Parcul Natural Apuseni. The Satul de Vacanță Vârtop, located in Nucet, is designated as a holiday resort of local tourist interest. The designation is based on Government Decision No. 120/2024, published in Official Gazette No. 144 on February 22, 2024. For winter sports, the Satul de Vacanță Vârtop has ski slopes.

Groapa Ruginoasă is an erosion-created ravine with red-violet quartzite layers and a gorge-like form. The eroded area covers approximately 20 hectares; the ravine is more than 600 meters wide and over 100 meters deep.

Peştera Porţile Bihorului cave is located in the settlement of Băiţa, which belongs to the city of Nucet, in the Bihor Mountains of the Western Carpathians and within Parcul Național Apuseni. The surrounding area therefore includes both a distinctive erosion landscape and a cave among its named natural sites.

Culture

The Casa de Cultură „Ion Davideanu“ cultural center in Nucet was built in the 1950s in the Soviet architectural style. The building was renovated, with the work completed in 2011.

Băița has been documented in records since the 13th century. Empress Maria Theresa is said to have selected the site and had the Roman Catholic church in Băița built.

The history of Nucet and Băița thus spans from their documented mention in the 13th century to the cultural center from the 1950s and its completion after renovation in 2011.

Geographical Setting

National road DN 75 passes through Nucet, Băița and Vârtop. It connects Ștei with Turda.
