Vadu Crişului – Cave, Waterfall and Culture

Nature

At Vadu Crişului, a stream emerges from Vadu Crișului Cave and forms the Vadu Crișului Waterfall. The cave is home to a large bat colony, including species protected at European level. Cabana Vadu Crișului is located in the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0062 Defileul Crișului Repede – Pădurea Craiului. Thus, the cave, flowing water and protected natural area are closely connected thematically.

From Vadu Crişului, a 1.9-kilometre route leads on foot along the railway to Vadu Crișului Cave. The accessible section follows a circular route lasting 30 to 60 minutes. The path to the cave and the tour inside form part of the same visit, but remain spatially and temporally separate sections. The duration of the tour represents a separate time frame for cave visits and can be taken into account alongside the journey to the cave when planning the day.

History and Culture

Vadu Crișului Cave was opened to visitors in 1905. For the occasion, Czárán Gyula produced the cave’s first guidebook. White ceramics have been produced in Vadu Crişului for centuries. They were exported across large parts of the Hungarian Plain and were known there in the 18th century as “Romanian ceramics”.

The Orthodox Church of “Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” in Vadu Crișului is a historic monument and was completed in 1790. Historical sites in the wider regional area also include Ruinele Cetăţii, a historic site. Together with the local ceramic tradition, the church points to a history connected not only with natural formations.

Activities

Rafting and kayaking are possible on some sections of the Crişul Repede between Bratca and Vadu Crişului; the route is considered moderately difficult. Several equipped climbing routes are located on the northern slope in the Vadu Crişului area. These include areas at Pereții Mari, Lac, Gasparu Mic, Ruine and Terase, as well as the Atlantida and Claia Mică walls.

Six officially approved mountain hiking trails are located within the administrative area of Vadu Crişului.

Secătura is a mountain in the surroundings of Vadu Crişului. Dealul Frăsinoasa is a mountain in the wider regional area. The caves Peştera care Cântă and Peştera Prăbusită are also located in the wider regional area.

Several churches add to this regional selection: Biserica Sfinţii Arhangheli, Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului and Biserica Roşia are located in the wider regional surroundings of Vadu Crişului. The named mountains, caves, churches and the historic site Ruinele Cetăţii broaden the view beyond the town’s immediate natural and cultural attractions.
