Discover Sâmbăta: wooden churches, the Holod Depression and caves

Sâmbăta is located in the Holod Depression and the Pădurea Craiului hill country. The commune lies on the Holod River. There is an Orthodox parish church in the village of Sâmbăta. The monument to the heroes stands in the courtyard of this Orthodox church. It was erected in 2000.

Culture

The wooden church in Sâmbăta dates from 1715. It is dedicated to Saint Hierarch Nicholas.

The wooden church in Copăceni, in the commune of Sâmbăta, dates from the 17th century. In the second half of the 18th century, it was moved to its present location. It is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-A-01138. The portal is decorated with interlinked circles and semicircles. Ropes, diagonal lines and rosettes can also be seen on the portal.

The wooden church in Ogești, also in the commune of Sâmbăta, was built in 1826. Its interior walls are decorated with glass icons from Nicula. The iconostasis also bears glass icons from Nicula. As a historic monument, the church is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-B-01178.

The wooden church in Rotărești dates from 1810. It is listed under heritage protection code BH-II-m-B-01191. The wooden church “Sfântul Nicolae” has a Transylvanian, ship-like design. Its walls are made of oak beams. The paintings contain realistic and humorous touches.

The churches in Sâmbăta, Copăceni, Ogești and Rotărești each have their own historical and design characteristics. As a result, different construction periods, materials and forms come together in the commune: from the older wooden construction and an intricately designed portal to glass icons, oak beams and a ship-like layout. The paintings in Rotărești also create their own design focus with their realistic and humorous touches.

National road DN 76 runs for approximately seven kilometres through the commune of Sâmbăta. All villages belonging to the commune of Sâmbăta are connected to the commune seat by paved local roads. County road DJ 767 connects DN 76 near Sâmbăta with Dobrești.

Thus, the road network records both a longer crossing of the commune and the connection of the affiliated villages with the commune seat. The additional connection via DJ 767 leads from DN 76 near Sâmbăta to Dobrești.
