Gura Văii: Churches, Archaeology and the Trotuș Landscape

Culture and History

The church “Biserica cu hramurile «Adormirea Maicii Domnului şi Sf. Ştefan» de la Gura Văii” was built in 1750 by Ștefan Roset Velban. It stands south of Gura Văii in the former hamlet of Pătrăşcani and was extended in the 19th century.

The “Naşterea Maicii Domnului” church in Gura Văii was originally called “Biserica «Sf. Nicolae», din Râpile de Jos”; it received its present name in 1963. Its iconostasis contains seven large icons painted in the second half of the 18th century. The Heroes’ Monument “Monumentul Eroilor de la Biserica Pătrășcani” was erected in 1919.

The Gura Văii–La Coşuri archaeological site lies north of the village of Gura Văii on Coşuri Hill, approximately 1.5 kilometers north of the commune center. The Pătrășcani-Siliște archaeological settlement in the commune of Gura Văii was inhabited during the Early Bronze Age and during phases Ic3 and Ic2 in the development of the Monteoru culture.

Historically, Gura Văii was a Răzeși village; its former settlement core was located at Huitoare on the slope of Runcu Hill. As it developed, Gura Văii shifted its settlement focus to the left bank of the Trotuș.

The locations associated with the historical evidence differ: the wooden church from 1680 stands in the center, Pătrăşcani lies south of Gura Văii, and the La Coşuri site is located north of the commune center on Coşuri Hill. Thus, the churches, monument and archaeological settlements are distributed across different parts of the commune.

Landscape

The commune of Gura Văii lies in the Eastern Carpathian Subcarpathians and in the Trotuș Depression. It is located at the transition between the Pietricica ridge and the Tazlău–Cașin Depression. The hilly area of the commune of Gura Văii is predominantly forested. In the southwest, the Trotuș River forms the natural boundary of the Gura Văii commune area.

Getting Around the Commune

County road DJ 119 crosses the territory of the Gura Văii commune. It connects the Bacău–Onești direction with the villages of the commune, including Gura Văii. Public transport in the commune of Gura Văii is organized through six routes with a total length of 260 kilometers; there are also nine upgraded bus stops. There is a playground in the village of Gura Văii.

The transport infrastructure and the spatial location belong to different levels: DJ 119 connects the commune with the Bacău–Onești direction, while the six public routes serve the villages within the commune. For families, the playground in the village of Gura Văii complements these municipal facilities.

Events

Cultural events are held regularly in the commune of Gura Văii and also attract the interest of residents from other places. For 2024, the third edition of the cultural and arts festival “Festival Istoric – Gura Văii” was scheduled to take place; the festival was part of the “Altarul de Jertfă și Eroism al Bacăului” program.
