Slănic-Moldova: Hiking Trails, Springs and Culture

The Șaua Nemirei hiking trail begins in Slănic-Moldova and takes 4 to 5 hours. The Valea Uzului hiking trail crosses the main ridge of the Nemira Mountains and takes 9 to 10 hours. The described trails therefore range from a hike lasting several hours that starts in the town to a long route across the mountain ridge.

Nature

The 300 de scări trail begins near the mineral springs area of Slănic-Moldova. On the way back, it leads via the Popas area along the Cheile Slănicului back to the starting point. The gorge and the Cascada Slănicului are part of the 300 de scări trail. As an easy forest walk, the trail requires neither special physical preparation nor specific equipment for mountain hikes. The 300 de scări trail can be walked in summer and winter. This route therefore connects the springs area with the gorge and waterfall, while the Traseu Belvedere provides another landscape experience.

The Nemira ski slope is 1,414 m long. It is classified as easy and has an average gradient of 17.6%.

The Traseu Belvedere begins in Parcul Central and leads to a viewpoint. It can be reached via a 2 km-long footpath that takes 45 minutes. The central park is therefore both the starting point for this short trail and the setting for several cultural events.

History

The first mineral spring in Slănic-Moldova was discovered on July 20, 1801, by Serdar Mihalache Spiridon. The Slănic-Moldova spa town currently has nine licensed mineral springs.

The mineral waters from Slănic-Moldova received gold medals at exhibitions in Vienna in 1873, at the World's Fair in Paris in 1889 and at the Cooperative Exhibition in Bucharest in 1894. The springs are therefore part both of the town's history since the early 19th century and of the spa town's documented exhibition history.

Culture

The Foișor Muzical in Parcul Central was built in the Art Nouveau style. Parcul Central covers 4.16 hectares and offers tourists an attractively designed setting for leisure activities.

The Cazinoul Regal was completed in 1894 according to the plans of architects George Sterian and H. Rick. The music pavilion and the casino represent two buildings in the townscape from different cultural contexts, each with its own named historical references.

Events

The Festival of Christmas and New Year's Customs in the Old Style was held for the seventh time on January 5, 2025, in Parcul Central in Slănic-Moldova. The festival has become a tradition. Every year, it brings together bear groups, masked groups and groups of carol singers from the valleys of the Slănic and the Trotuș.

In August 2025, Slănic-Moldova hosted the two-day event “La izvor de tradiție,” dedicated to tradition, folk costume and folk singing. The two events demonstrate different temporal forms of the cultural programme: an annual festival held in January and a two-day event in August.

For July 4, 2026, the mountain running event “Legendele Nemirei” was announced to include a half marathon of approximately 26 km, a 14 km cross-country race and a children's race.
