Culture

At the History and Archaeology Museum in Bacău, local history is presented across various historical periods through ceramics, tools, jewellery and cult objects. The permanent exhibition of the Bacău Art Museum comprises 350 works in two halls, covering old art, painting, graphic art, decorative art and sculpture. Arranged chronologically, it traces the development of Romanian fine art from its beginnings to the present day.

The Nicu Enea Memorial House is located in a building constructed in 1926. It is classified as a historic monument and has been included on Romania’s list of historic monuments. The exhibition in the memorial house presents part of Nicu Enea’s artistic work.

The “Precista” Church was built between 1489 and 1490 and completed on 1 January 1491. It was part of the medieval architectural complex of Bacău’s princely court.

The Bacău Ethnography Museum preserves choir stalls made in 1729 from the church in Rusăiești-Poduri, as well as a Tree of Life carpet dated 1843 from the “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” Church in Bacău. Its permanent exhibition presents agriculture and livestock farming as the main occupations, as well as beekeeping, hunting and fishing as secondary activities.

The “Victor Anestin” Astronomical Observatory is also part of the city’s cultural offerings: it regularly organises public observation sessions for solar and lunar eclipses, transits of the inner planets across the solar disc, as well as observations of the Sun, Moon, planets, star clusters and galaxies. The “Mihail Jora” Philharmonic of Bacău organises national and international festivals, including “Enescu, Orfeul Moldav” in Bacău and Tescani, “Zilele Muzicii Contemporane” and “Festivalul serilor băcăuane”.

Nature

The Bacău Natural History Museum at No. 9 Aleea Parcului ceased its activities for the public as of 22 June 2026 due to a comprehensive modernisation and expansion project for its exhibition spaces. Its permanent exhibitions include the forest ecosystems of Romania, nature conservation and the minerals of the Earth’s crust; they are complemented by a miniature cave.

The Bacău Vivarium presents native and exotic reptiles in terrariums designed to create conditions as close to nature as possible. Lacul Bacău II is a 202-hectare special avifaunal protection area in Bacău.

The “George Bacovia” Memorial House is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. The Nicu Enea Memorial House is open from Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00; it remains closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

Admission to all museums in the “Iulian Antonescu” Museum Complex is free.
