Piteşti: Culture, Parks and Special Experiences

In the centre of Piteşti is the Memorial Închisoarea Pitești, which addresses the Pitești phenomenon: a form of continuous physical and psychological torture applied to anti-communist students between 1949 and 1951. The memorial has a car park suitable for coaches. One-hour guided tours are offered in Romanian or English.

The Biserica Domnească „Sfântul Gheorghe“ was built in 1656 by Prince Constantin Șerban and Doamna Bălașa. It is open daily from 07:00 to 20:00.

Culture

Most concerts and anniversary events organised by the Piteşti city administration take place in Piața Primăriei. The Galerie de Artă „Rudolf Schweitzer – Cumpăna“ is housed in a building constructed in 1886 in a classically influenced eclectic style.

Stage and Art

The Teatrul „Alexandru Davila“ is located in the centre of Piteşti and comprises the Drama, Revue, and Children and Youth departments. Studioul 125, also known as Sala „Liviu Ciulei“, was inaugurated in 1975 as a studio theatre for experimental performances.

The Reuniunea Studiourilor Teatrale, held four times between 1980 and 1983, was revived in 2001 as the Festivalul Național al Teatrului de Studio and later became an international festival. The Fundația Culturală Ilfoveanu offers courses in photography, decorative arts and visual arts for children, young people and adults, as well as workshops in handicrafts, media and communication.

The temporary exhibition galleries of the Fundația Culturală Ilfoveanu are dedicated to contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations and experimental projects. In addition, the foundation presents a permanent exhibition featuring works by Sorin Ilfoveanu.

Museums and Planetarium

The Muzeul Județean Argeș is housed in the former prefecture building, which was constructed between 1889 and 1899. Its main building houses the history and natural sciences departments as well as the planetarium.

The Muzeul Județean Argeș also houses the Muzeul Sportului Argeșean, which has been open to the public since 2008. The Planetarium Piteşti uses a 4K UHD laser projection system.

Parks and Nature

Lunca Argeșului Park is a 24-hectare park on the lower terrace of the Argeș River and has 4 kilometres of cycle paths. The Simfonia Lalelelor festival, held annually in April, has taken place in this park since 2022.

Trivale Park was created from 1900 onwards in a centuries-old oak forest under the direction of landscape architect Edouard Redont. The Pădurea Trivale forest reserve is characterised by rare thermophilous oaks and diverse vegetation.

In 2023, Piteşti Zoo covered 12 hectares and included more than 60 species, with a total of 1,800 animals. Parcul Ștrand has a timetable for the miniature train as well as boat and pedal boat rental.
