Lipova: Bazarul Turcesc, Churches and Castle Ruins

The Bazarul Turcesc in the center of Lipova is one of the few surviving testimonies to Ottoman rule in the Banat and is unique in Romania.

The façade of the Bazarul Turcesc “Sub Dughene” features eight cylindrical pilasters. Arches connect the pilasters and span a commercial passageway.

The Muzeul Orașului Lipova is located in Casa Bocu, a building constructed in the 18th century. It was founded in 1958 and reopened in its present form in 2001 after extensive renovation. Casa Sever Bocu once housed an ethnographic collection, weaving works and a museum established by Marilina Bocu.

The Biserica Ortodoxă “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” in Lipova dates from the 14th century. The church has Byzantine frescoes by Nedelcu from 1732. It received its narthex and approximately half of its present nave around 1338 in the Byzantine style.

History

The ruins of Cetatea de la Șoimoș are located on the “Cioaca Tăutului” hill, 2 km northeast of Lipova and at an elevation of 129 meters. Cetatea de la Șoimoș was first documented in 1278 and was completely rebuilt by Iancu de Hunedoara around 1440–1446.

Băile Lipova is a spa resort with carbonated waters. The resort is located 3 km from Lipova and has been known since the 18th century.

Religious Sites

In the immediate vicinity of Lipova lies the Mânăstirea Romano-Catolică Sfânta Maria, a monastery. The Biserica Ortodoxă Lipova, the Biserica Catolică Lipova and the Biserica Reformată Lipova are also located nearby.

The pilgrimage church Basilica Maria Radna was granted the title of Basilica Minor by Pope John Paul II in 1992. The Maria Radna ensemble is classified as a Category A historic monument.

Cioacă Banoşu Mic, Dealul Bisericii and Capul Vancului are peaks in the area around Lipova. Cioacă Burdiz is a mountain in the same area.

In addition to the walkable route and the interactive map, a detailed brochure and information panels are among its components. The panels are located at the entrance to Lipova and in the area around the monastery, while the route itself is named as a literary-historical project.
