The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie presents a chronological and thematic account of Arad’s history from the 12th century to 1919. The Cetatea Aradului is a late Vauban-style fortress with a star-shaped layout and six bastions.

Culture

Construction of the Cetatea Aradului began in 1762 and lasted more than 20 years. The efforts associated with the fortress have not yet been completed. The Palatul Cultural currently houses the headquarters of the county museum and the State Philharmonic.

The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie brings together two approaches: the chronological arrangement follows the development over time, while the thematic presentation brings together individual aspects of Arad’s history. The Cetatea Aradului complements this perspective with its clearly recognizable form. Its star-shaped layout and six bastions are just as much part of its appearance as the long construction period beginning in 1762.

The Palatul Cultural displays several clearly distinguishable architectural elements: its façade is designed in the neoclassical style, the side wings are in the style of the Italian Renaissance, and the side facing the park is inspired by Gothic elements of Hunedoara Castle. The Parcul Reconcilierii is home to the Statue of Liberty and, in its immediate vicinity, the 9 m-high Arcul de Triumf. The triumphal arch features depictions of significant figures from Romanian history and was created by the sculptor Ioan Bolborea.

At the Palatul Cultural, the building’s impact can be appreciated from different viewing angles. The neoclassical façade is complemented by the Italian-influenced side wings; on the park side, the impression changes through the Gothic references to Hunedoara Castle. In the Parcul Reconcilierii, the Statue of Liberty and the triumphal arch additionally draw attention to sculpture and history.

At 38 m, the Galeriile „Turnul de apă“ were once the tallest building in the city of Arad. Today, they house a permanent water exhibition as well as numerous changing art exhibitions. The Neological Synagogue has an interior in the Spanish-Moorish style with rich, colorful geometric ornamentation and an organ considered to be of high quality.

Nature and Activities

The Parcul Natural Lunca Mureșului extends from Arad along the Mureș River to the Hungarian border. The protected natural area covers 17,455 ha, forming a large-scale landscape region along the river.

The landscape data describe the natural area not only through its extent, but also through its connection with the river. The Parcul Natural Lunca Mureșului follows the Mureș from Arad to the Hungarian border; the Arad-Pecica water route and the Arad-Pecica cycle path take up this river landscape in different ways. The cycle path also passes through woodland and typical floodplain habitats, while the canoe route is specified more precisely by its length and duration.

On the Mureș, the „Arad-Pecica“ route is designed for eco-tours by canoe or kayak. It is 25 km long and can be completed in 3 to 4 hours. The stated distance and duration directly indicate the scope of this water-based activity.

The „Arad-Pecica“ cycle path begins at the Centrul de Vizitare Ceala near Municipiul Arad and ends at the Ferma de Bivoli in Pecica. The route passes through woodland and typical floodplain habitats along the Mureș River.
