Săvârșin: Royal Estate, Gardens and Art

The Săvârșin Royal Estate is open to the public weekly from 1 May to 1 October, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00; the park can be visited accompanied by a guide.

Culture and Estate

A tiny island was added to the lake on the Săvârșin Royal Estate in 1943; at the same time, the eastern shore was adapted for a small landing stage. The island in the middle of the lake is connected to the shore by a birch bridge, which was renewed in 2001.

The Micul Pavilion, together with the old stable, is among the oldest buildings on the Săvârșin Royal Estate. It was probably built in the second half of the 18th century during the time of Baron Andras Forray senior, or together with the second version of the castle between 1806 and 1815. The first building on the grounds of Săvârșin Royal Castle was constructed between 1650 and 1680.

The Atelierul Auto al Regelui Mihai I was opened to the public and is located in the original section of the building from the 1940s. The original tools and spare parts have been preserved there. The Muzeul Regal al Automobilului is located in the restored building of the royal garage in Satul Regal.

Nature

The Aleea Stejarilor Bătrâni dates from 1816; only six to eight of the original oaks remain.

The Grădina Ascunsă contains trees and shrubs that are comparatively rare in Romania. These include albizia, Judas trees, Japanese maples, Royal Red maples, Visteria floribunda, several magnolias from America and Asia, as well as hydrangeas, hostas and phlox. The Grădina Ascunsă is one of the visitor attractions on the Săvârșin Royal Estate.

Art

The painter Eugen Popa’s parental home and a significant art collection, supplemented by ethnographic pieces, became public property in spring 2008 through a donation from Eugenia Hagiu Popa. Both were granted the status of a memorial house and an art collection.

The Casa Memorială și Colecția de Artă Eugenia și Eugen Popa in Săvârșin was opened to the public in 2008. The Casa Memorială și Colecția de Artă Eugenia și Eugen Popa in Săvârșin is listed on the tourist Traseul Valea Mureșului.

Visit

Following severe weather events in the Săvârșin region, the park of the Royal Castle was temporarily closed for one month for restoration and maintenance work.

Anyone including the park in their plans should schedule their visit within the seasonal period and on one of the specified weekdays; a guide is indicated as accompanying visitors during the tour. The opening hours from 9:00 to 18:00 define the stated daily timeframe.
