Fântânele: Historical Monuments and Religious Traditions

In the centre of Fântânele, at number 116, lies the Kövér-Appel Castle ensemble. The castle is registered as a historical monument and dated to the period 1800–1850. The ensemble’s park also has the status of a registered historical monument and is dated to the same period. Both components belong to a single complex.

The date 1800–1850 refers to the same historical period for both the castle and the park. The ensemble therefore combines a castle registered as a monument with a park that is likewise registered; the two monument components are jointly located at address 116 in the centre of Fântânele.

The castle ensemble includes a dendrological park. It contains numerous ornamental trees and thus preserves a distinct part of the complex focused on woody plants. Among the ornamental trees is an American walnut tree.

The dendrological designation draws attention to the complex’s tree population. The numerous ornamental trees explicitly include an American walnut tree; in addition to the park as a monument, a single named woody plant within the ensemble is therefore also mentioned.

Culture

Another registered historical monument in Fântânele is the Roman Catholic Church of “Îngerul Păzitor”. The church is dated to the year 1780. Alongside the castle ensemble, the village therefore also has a religious building with its own chronological classification. The architectural monument “Fântâna îngerului” is likewise one of Fântânele’s historical elements.

With its date of 1780, the “Îngerul Păzitor” Church adds another individual chronological reference to the history of the village. The castle, park and church are each named as independent historical monuments, while “Fântâna îngerului” is added as a separate architectural monument.

The history of the village includes its founding in 1766. Fântânele was founded as Engelsbrunn during the Swabian colonisation of the Banat.

The year 1766 therefore marks the founding date of Fântânele. The name Engelsbrunn belongs to this founding in the context of the Swabian colonisation of the Banat.

Kövér-Appel refers to the castle ensemble, “Îngerul Păzitor” to the Roman Catholic Church, and “Fântâna îngerului” is named as a separate architectural monument. The Orthodox church appears in connection with the patronal feast and the Hram celebration, while the date 1780 belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. The founding as Engelsbrunn additionally points to the origins of Fântânele in the Banat; the Mureș and the dendrological park complement these historical references with two different landscape features.

Tradition

The patronal feast of Fântânele’s Orthodox church is the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. A specific expression of this religious tradition is documented for the 2024 Hram celebration: a procession took place around the Orthodox church in Fântânele. The feast day and procession are therefore among the village’s religious references.

The Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God identifies the religious reference of the patronal feast. For the 2024 Hram celebration, the procession around the Orthodox church is also named as a specific form of this tradition.

Nature

Fântânele lies on the left bank of the Mureș River. While the river determines the side of the river on which the village is situated, the park is characterised by its numerous ornamental trees and the American walnut tree within the castle ensemble.

The location on the left bank of the Mureș complements the historical architectural and local information with a clear geographical relationship. Within Fântânele, this river connection stands alongside the tree population of the dendrological park.
