Hălmăgel: Watermill, Churches, Ceramics and Hiking Trail

Culture

In Hălmăgel, the original millstones of the watermill still grind wheat and maize. The facility operates with old wooden equipment. The watermill uses the water power of the Hălmăgel stream. In the centre of the village is Hălmăgel’s functioning watermill, a designated tourist attraction. It was built in 1850 by Duma Teodor.

The present-day church in Hălmăgel is built of masonry. It replaced an older wooden church in 1806. Its dedication to the Holy Archangels continues to this day. The village of Vâșdoci belongs to the municipality of Hălmăgel. Its wooden church dates from 1860. Its interior painting dates from 1870 and was executed by Ioan Demetrovici.

Traditional pottery has been preserved in the municipality of Hălmăgel. The village of Târnăvița is now home to the only pottery centre there that is still in operation. The ceramics from Târnăvița are predominantly glazed utilitarian pottery. They have a fine clay body, simple ornaments and an authentic character. Nedeia de la Hălmăgel takes place on Whit Monday.

The cultural evidence is therefore found not only in the main village but also in the villages of the municipality: Hălmăgel stands for its watermill and church, Vâșdoci for its wooden architecture and interior painting, and Târnăvița for its preserved pottery tradition. The different construction dates and traces of craftsmanship make the history of the locality visible in several specific forms.

Nature

The municipality of Hălmăgel lies in the transition zone of the Zărand-Gurahonț-Hălmagiu Depression. The Zărand Mountains are located to the south. The Codru-Moma Mountains lie to the north. Hălmăgel is situated at the western foot of Mount Găina. In the landscape of the municipality of Hălmăgel, Piatra Fetei is designated as a “natural feature”. The municipality belongs to the Munții Bihor Natura 2000 site. The site code is ROSCI0324.

The landscape is thus characterised by the transition between the depression and the surrounding mountain area. For its geographical setting, the mountain ranges to the south and north, as well as Mount Găina, form part of the described municipal territory. Piatra Fetei complements these geographical details as a specifically designated natural feature.

Hiking

The hiking trail is marked with a blue stripe. It runs from Gara Hălmagiu via Hălmăgel. It then continues over the Culmea Găinii to Muntele Găina. The entire route is approximately 22.9 km long.

The trail begins at Hălmagiu CFR railway station near the E79/DN76 road. From there, it follows the road towards Hălmagiu for approximately 3.1 km to the junction with DJ792F road to Hălmăgel.

The approximate total length of 22.9 km is important for planning the time required for the trail. The described starting point at the railway station and the approximately 3.1 km-long first section make the beginning of the route easy to follow, before the marked trail continues via Hălmăgel towards Culmea Găinii and Muntele Găina.

The municipality’s road network includes the DJ 792F county road to Sârbi and the DJ 763A county road to Târnăvița. These two roads also indicate the connections to the localities and villages where further cultural evidence described above can be found.
