Șagu: Archaeology, Churches and History in the Câmpia Vingăi

Landscape and History

Șagu is located in the Câmpia Vingăi, which is part of the Câmpia Tisei. The settlement’s history reaches far back and combines archaeological traces with preserved religious buildings. Following German colonization in 1770, Șagu experienced renewed growth. As part of the redesign of the settlement after 1770, a new Catholic church was built in the center.

Churches and Frescoes

The first Orthodox church in Șagu was built on the ruins of a medieval Catholic church. The Orthodox Church of Șagu was consecrated on October 14, 1994, by Patriarch Teoctist together with Nicolae, the Metropolitan of Banat, and Timotei, the Archbishop of Arad. Its walls were decorated with frescoes by Mihail Bălășescu between 1982 and 1986. Thus, medieval references, the history of settlement development, and more recent ecclesiastical furnishings stand side by side in one place.

Archaeological Sites

The Șagu-Sit A1_1 archaeological site is located on the first terrace of a former riverbed or former branch of the Mureș. It lies 200 meters south of the midpoint between Șagu and Cruceni, on the road connecting the two places. Excavations at the Șagu – Site A1_1 archaeological site covered almost 3 hectares and yielded findings from the first phase of the Late Bronze Age.

The Șagu-Vest archaeological site is recorded 1.23 kilometers northwest of the Orthodox Church of Șagu and 420 meters southeast of the left slope of the Valea Viilor stream. The two sites therefore refer to different landscape settings: the former river landscape of the Mureș and the surroundings of the Valea Viilor stream. For visitors interested in culture, this creates a local landscape in which waterways, settlement history, and churches are spatially connected.

Local Festival

Ziua Comunei Șagu is a recurring local festival. The 2026 edition was described as the twelfth edition and as an event that has already become a tradition. For a recurring festival, current event dates should be checked before traveling, as the timing may vary from one edition to another.

Connections and Orientation

National road DN 69 is the most important transport connection through Șagu municipality and connects it with Arad and Timișoara. DJ 682 G connects Șagu with Cruceni and continues via DJ 682 A toward Firiteaz. For journeys on named roads, current route conditions can be checked before traveling.

On DN 69, at the entrance to Șagu, the Hotel-Restaurant “Cabana Deltei” is located on the left-hand side when traveling from Arad toward Timișoara.
