The Cuvioasa Paraschiva wooden church in Pianu de Sus was built from fir wood on a stone foundation. Its paintings were applied directly to the wood of the beams. It is located in the upper part of the cemetery of Parish I in Pianu de Sus. This church therefore combines a clearly identified construction method, an unusual painting surface and a precisely described location within the cemetery.

The Buna Vestire church also stands in the upper part of Pianu de Sus. It is surrounded by arcades painted in 1929. The church is almost 200 years old. Cyrillic inscriptions have been preserved inside it to this day; some date from the time of its construction. Buna Vestire therefore brings together the painted arcades from 1929, the older inscriptions inside the church and the building’s great age.

The Nașterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul church is located in the lower part of Pianu de Sus. It was built around 1837. According to local tradition, it was constructed with the contribution of a wealthy family from the village. The family donated a cauldron filled with gold coins for this purpose. Thus, this locally handed-down account of its origins is also part of the church’s description, alongside the year of construction.

History

The monument to the heroes who fell in the First World War stands in the centre of Pianu de Sus. The monument lists the names of 72 fallen soldiers. Its central location and the commemoration of the individuals by name give the monument a clearly identified connection to the history of the village.

The cemetery surrounding the Cuvioasa Paraschiva wooden church still contains decorated wooden grave pillars bearing the symbol “XIII”. The grave pillars mentioned in Pianu de Sus have a square cross-section. Their height is given as 1.20 to 2.00 metres. From top to bottom, the pillars are carved with geometric motifs. The pillars are therefore characterised by both the recurring symbol “XIII” and their square shape, the stated range of sizes and the continuous geometric carved decoration.

The tricolour carried by the mounted group from Pianu de Sus in 1918 is preserved in the Orthodox Parish Church No. 1 of Pianu de Sus. The surviving cloth links a specific year and a named group of bearers with a specific place of preservation in the village.

Traditions

Every year, around 1 December, the residents of Pianu de Sus gather in front of the town hall. There, they listen to the Hora Unirii and Christmas carols performed by the church choir.

At the celebration, the residents drink mulled wine and celebrate the national holiday. The date falls around 1 December. The recurring programme therefore includes meeting in front of the town hall, the two musical contributions, mulled wine and the national holiday.
