Discover Sebeș: City Fortifications, Churches and Râpa Roșie

The city fortifications of Sebeș are documented by an official construction document from 1387. They form a rectangular enclosure with rounded corners around the inner city and demarcate the historic centre. The enclosure covers approximately 20 hectares and has a perimeter of 1,700 metres.

Culture and Architectural History

The Evangelical parish church of Sebeș preserves architectural, structural and decorative elements from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Its furnishings include a winged altarpiece with carved and painted biblical scenes dating from the first decades of the 16th century.

In the centre of Sebeș stands Zápolya House, a Category A monument. The building was constructed of stone in the 15th century, substantially extended in the following century, and displays Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. The Sf. Iacob Chapel illustrates Transylvanian Gothic architecture from the first decades of the 15th century.

The church of the Roman Catholic Sf. Bartolomeu Monastery has a single-nave hall layout with a nave, a chancel and a polygonal apse to the east. The Croitorilor/Studentului Tower is square and has a ground floor and four additional storeys. The later storeys were added in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The parish church, by contrast, combines Romanesque and Gothic elements with a winged altarpiece whose carved and painted biblical scenes date from the first decades of the 16th century. Zápolya House complements this architectural heritage through its construction in the 15th century, its substantial extension in the following century, and its combination of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. The Sf. Bartolomeu Monastery church is also characterised by its clear sequence of nave, chancel and polygonal apse to the east. The later addition of the upper storeys in the 15th and 16th centuries can also be traced on the Croitorilor/Studentului Tower.

Events

The International Lucian Blaga Festival has been held every year in May in Sebeș and Lancrăm for more than 40 years. The “Carl Filtsch” Music Days bring pianists and performers of classical music from Romania and abroad to Sebeș.

The “Felician Fărcașiu” folklore festival and competition is a traditional autumn event in Sebeș. The scientific conference “Multiculturalism and Historical Heritage in Transylvania” takes place annually and presents current research findings to specialists and the general public.

Nature

The Râpa Roșie nature reserve features landforms created by erosion. These include towers, columns, obelisks, buttresses and earth pyramids.

Access to the nature reserve begins on the road from Sebeș towards Daia Română via DJ 106 K. The route then follows the river to the foot of the protected area.
