Ampoița combines an easy circular trail through Cheile Ampoiței with distinctive limestone formations, a multi-layered settlement history and ancient art. The gorge can be explored on a circular trail lasting one to two hours. Activities at Cheile Ampoiței include hiking, climbing, photography and picnicking. Hiking and climbing shape the more active sections, while photography and picnicking offer further opportunities along the trail. This makes it possible to combine different forms of exploration on a single circular route without conflating the individual activities. Before setting out on a hike or climbing tour, current trail conditions should be checked; on a circular route, planning for the return to the starting point is also standard.
Nature
Near the summit of the route at Ampoița lies the Piatra Boului rock formation. It is a nature reserve and forms a single distinctive rock formation along the route. The Rezervația Naturală Calcarele de la Ampoița is also a nature reserve. It consists of three isolated limestone blocks measuring 44 m, 27 m and 15 m in height. The main purpose of this protected area is to preserve geological and geomorphological diversity. Piatra Boului and Calcarele de la Ampoița thus represent two different forms of protected rock: one a single formation near the route summit, the other a group of three isolated limestone blocks.
History
The Situl arheologic de la Ampoiţa - La Pietre is documented as a settlement with several phases of occupation. The sequence extends from the Eneolithic through the Early and Middle Bronze Age and the Geto-Dacian La Tène period to the Early and High Middle Ages. The settlement site has the longest and best-preserved stratigraphic sequence of prehistoric occupation in the southwestern Apuseni Mountains. Several eras occur here in a chronological sequence extending from prehistoric settlement through the Middle Ages. The stratigraphic layers preserve this long settlement sequence at the same archaeological site.
Culture
The Biserica din Ampoița is an important monument of ancient art. The first evidence of an original monument dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The church building contains 15th-century transitional elements from Gothic to Renaissance, as well as additions from the 18th century. Its present appearance is primarily the result of alterations made in the 18th century. The Biserica din Ampoița thus displays several construction phases: early evidence of an original monument, transitional elements from Gothic to Renaissance, and additions from the 18th century. These chronological layers belong to the same church building, although their periods of origin do not coincide. The Biserica din Ampoița can be reached via Alba Iulia, Șard (DN 74) and Ampoița (DJ 68).
