Gârbova: Ethnography and Historic Fortresses

Gârbova is located in southern Transylvania, on the southern edge of the Secaș Depression and at the northern foot of the Sebeș and Cibin Mountains.

The geographical location thus identifies both the depression and the two mountain ranges in their respective relation to the village. Gârbova is assigned to southern Transylvania, while the Secaș Depression and the northern foothills of the Sebeș and Cibin Mountains provide the more precise spatial context.

Culture

The Gârbova ethnographic exhibition is arranged in two rooms and conveys the everyday life of the local community.

The focus is therefore not on a single building, but on the way of life of the local community. The division into two rooms is part of the exhibition's arrangement and gives this insight a clearly defined framework.

The folk costume parade takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. At this event, Saxon and Romanian costumes are presented, and the parade also invites folklore groups to participate. The fixed date in early autumn and the two costume traditions give the event a distinct temporal and cultural character. Saxon and Romanian elements are jointly at the center, while the folklore groups add to the parade's program.

For scheduling purposes, the date is clearly defined: the annual parade takes place on the first Sunday in September. Its connection with early autumn and the invitation of folklore groups are fixed components of this recurring event.

History

The cemetery of Gârbova is home to the Romanesque ruins of the Mountain Church. The ruins date from the 13th century.

The Mountain Church thus combines a specific location within Gârbova with a clearly defined historical date. Its ruins are not located outside the village, but in the cemetery, while the 13th century indicates the site's historical timeframe.

Gârbova is also home to the ruins of Cetatea Urieşilor – the Old Fortress, which are designated as a historic monument. The ruins are located approximately 2 km south of the village, in the forest along the road to Jina. They date from the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Muzeul Satului houses 30 polished stone pieces. The pieces were found in the mid-20th century upstream as far as “Submăceși”.

Fortresses

Cetatea Greavilor is located in the center of Gârbova. Access is possible exclusively through a tunnel beneath a separate gate tower. The complex illustrates the transformation from the fortified military residence of a Saxon nobleman into a community fortress.
