Terceira combines impressive volcanic landscapes with an exceptionally rich cultural history. Among the most distinctive landmarks are the approximately 400-year-old fortifications of São Sebastião and São João Baptista, remarkable examples of military architecture. Despite the devastating earthquake of 1 January 1980, Angra’s central zone preserves a large part of its monumental heritage and original vernacular architecture. It continues to form a cohesive urban ensemble. The Fortes de São Sebastião route also passes remnants of old fortifications for coastal defence from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Monte Brasil adds a special experience of landscape and history: the geosite was formed from an extinct volcano that originally lay in the sea and was later connected to the area where Angra do Heroísmo is now located. There are picnic areas, several viewpoints and the PRC04 hiking trail. From Miradouro do Pico das Cruzinhas, you can see the city and the island’s southern coast.

Hiking trails between coast, forest and protected areas

Anyone wishing to explore Terceira on foot will find a range of trail formats. The Grande Rota do Oeste GR01 TER crosses the western half of the island and connects the Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Lagoa das Patas with the Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Mata da Serreta along an approximately 31.2 km linear route. It passes coastal cliffs, natural forests and mountain areas, and also includes recreational and leisure areas.

The Baías da Agualva route runs along the north coast between the municipalities of Agualva and Quatro Ribeiras and mostly through a protected area of the Parque Natural da Terceira. The volcanic origins of the island are particularly vivid at the cliffs with columnar or prismatic jointing and at the fossilised trachyte cliffs. Along the route, you can observe endemic vegetation and seabirds, including Cory’s shearwaters and common terns.

Further nature experiences are offered by the Mistérios Negros route in the Serra de Santa Bárbara e dos Mistérios Negros Nature Reserve, in the Natura 2000 protected area and at the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara e Mistérios Negros geosite of the Azores Geopark, as well as by PRC10TER. PRC10TER is a short circular hiking trail in the protected area of the Central Plateau and north-west coast. It leads through a stand of laurel forest and offers views of Pico da Salsa, Pico Tamujo and the Sanguinhal marsh.

Volcanoes, caves and specialities

Algar do Carvão is a 100-metre-deep volcanic chimney in the central part of Terceira. As a natural monument of Terceira Nature Park and a geosite of the Azores Geopark, it combines geological features within a confined area: rainwater entering the chimney feeds a clear lake inside, and there are also silica stalactites and stalagmites. Located near Lagoa do Negro, Gruta do Natal is a 697-metre-long lava tunnel.

Fumaroles are scattered among the vegetation at Furnas do Enxofre. The area is also classified as a natural monument and geosite; a short footpath is recommended for exploring and interpreting it. For Algar do Carvão, you should observe current notices: a March 2026 announcement pointed out that the volcanic chimney may be closed at any time for short or longer periods, depending on the construction work required.

Regional cuisine is also part of planning your trip. Vinho Verdelho is produced in the municipality of Biscoitos on Terceira’s north coast. It is predominantly dry, but is also produced as a sweet or semi-dry wine. Sopas do Espírito Santo are prepared in all the island’s municipalities; their basic ingredients include, among other things, bread, butter and the cooking water from the meat.
