Santa Barbara: Nature, Trails and Island Views
Santa Barbara combines impressive volcanic landscapes with hiking experiences, expansive island views and a well-established local culture. On Terceira, the village therefore offers a variety of reasons to travel: you can explore natural phenomena, visit a viewpoint or engage with the churches, chapels and religious festivals of the parish of Santa Bárbara. Which accommodation suits you therefore depends primarily on whether you want to focus on landscapes, shared discoveries or cultural impressions.
Volcanic Landscapes and Protected Nature
A significant part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara massif forms the Serra de Santa Bárbara e dos Mistérios Negros Nature Reserve. The Serra de Santa Bárbara belongs to the central Santa Bárbara volcano. Its summit features a double caldera formed by two major collapse episodes. This geological character makes the landscape a distinctive destination for anyone who wants to get to know Terceira not only through its villages, but also through its volcanic origins.
For orientation before an excursion, the Centro de Interpretação da Serra de Santa Bárbara is a good place to start. It is located on the southern slope near the beginning of the trail leading to the summit and provides visitors with information about exploring Terceira's nature park. Those who enjoy structuring their days around different themes can combine their stay in Santa Barbara with nature observation and a cultural tour of the village.
Hiking at Mistérios Negros
The Mistérios Negros hiking trail begins and ends beside the support house of Gruta do Natal and Lagoa do Negro. Along the trail, you can observe a variety of endemic vegetation. The trail is also part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Special Protection Area and the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara e Mistérios Negros geosite of the Azores Geopark – UNESCO Global Geopark.
The Mistérios Negros therefore offers several ways to experience the area: you can observe the vegetation, move through a volcanically shaped environment and, at the same time, encounter an area with special protected-area and geosite status. For families or travel groups with different interests, it may be helpful to plan the hike as a separate day activity and leave other days for viewpoints and local culture.
Views and Local History
The Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara offers views over a large part of Terceira Island. From there, you can also see other islands in the Central Group. A stay in Santa Barbara can thus provide a peaceful counterpoint to a hike: instead of exploring the landscape along a trail, you can take in its expanse from above.
The history of the village is also reflected in several religious and community landmarks. The Santa Bárbara Mother Church is documented as having existed as early as 1592; extension work was carried out on it in 1834. The Nª Srª da Ajuda Chapel dates from 1877. According to a local legend, the stone figure kept there was washed ashore on the coast near this place. The Festas de Santa Bárbara include religious celebrations dedicated to the Divino Espírito Santo. They are organised by the Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo de Santa Bárbara, founded in 1876. As a community festival, they are part of the parish of Santa Bárbara in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island.
Another sign of public life in the village is the monument at Largo 1º de Janeiro, which was inaugurated on 1 June 2016. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Santa Barbara, you can therefore base your decision on your preferred travel rhythm: nature trails, viewpoints and local history each offer their own way of experiencing Terceira.
