Beach, bay and marina

Praia Grande is the largest sandy beach on the island of Terceira and is located in the bay of Praia da Vitória. The beach offers good conditions for windsurfing. Prainha, another area for water sports, is located near the marina of Praia da Vitória. During the bathing season, Prainha has a bar and changing rooms for all bathers.

The bay itself also shapes the character of the town. The marina of Praia da Vitória is protected by the bay’s northern and southern breakwaters. Due to its sheltered location, the bay offers ideal conditions for sailing. The marina has a platform, water and electricity connections, toilets and showers, a laundry, a 35-ton boat lift, internet and fuel.

Paul da Praia da Vitória is one of the two Ramsar sites on Terceira and also an excellent place for birdwatching. The Parque Ambiental do Paul also includes a recreation area. Culture and history on site

The Casa das Tias de Nemésio is a historic building from the 18th century. Vitorino Nemésio spent a large part of his childhood and youth in this house. The Igreja Matriz of Praia da Vitória features pointed-arch portals and Manueline chapels. The annual programme of the Festas da Praia also includes a bullfighting event on Praia Grande beach. The event is part of the respective annual programme and should therefore not be understood as an offer available year-round.

Planning visits

Visits to the Núcleo Museológico da Base Aérea nº 4 are scheduled on Fridays from 09:30 to 13:30; registration at least 24 hours in advance is required. Visits to the Igreja Matriz are scheduled from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00. Visits to the Casa Vitorino Nemésio are scheduled from Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 16:30. These fixed times are particularly important when planning cultural days.
