In S. Sebastiao, the impressions range from protected coastal landscapes and seabirds to traces of maritime defence and living traditions. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your trip, you can start by asking whether nature watching, the coast or local history should shape your stay. The different themes offer concrete points of interest without requiring you to limit yourself to just one kind of discovery.

Coastal Landscape and Nature Watching

The protected area of Ponta das Contendas includes Baía de Mós and three islets formed by marine erosion. Endemic Azorean plants grow on the slopes of Ponta, including Erica azorica, Spergularia azorica, Festuca petraea and Daucus carota azoricus. The variety of plant names itself shows just how distinctive the flora of this landscape is.

The Fortes de São Sebastião walking trail also offers a way to explore nature: endemic Azorean heather, Erica azorica, predominates in a small wooded area along the route. Roseate terns (Sterna dougallii), common terns (Sterna hirundo) and Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) nest in the protected landscape and can be observed from the trail. This means the plants and birdlife are not merely general features of the scenery, but are linked to specific species.

For a different coastal experience, Zona Balnear dos Salgueiros is worth a visit. Steps lead down to the sea, and there is also a natural swimming pool and a grassy area with picnic tables. Local conditions may vary with the season. Baía da Corda, meanwhile, is used by anglers with fishing rods—a distinct aspect of the coastal landscape to take in at a leisurely pace.

Fortresses, Local History and Traditions

The Fortes de São Sebastião walking trail passes the remains of maritime defensive fortifications dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and ends in Vila de São Sebastião. Each fort tells a different chapter in the history of this coast. Forte da Greta was built before 1580 to defend the small Baía de Santa Catarina das Mós against pirates and corsairs. Forte de Santa Catarina das Mós was built at the same time and for the same purpose; the sea destroyed it, leaving only a few traces. Forte do Pesqueiro dos Meninos, built before 1583, is described as a triangular bastion with four embrasures facing the sea.

Another notable structure is Farol das Contendas, at Ponta das Contendas in the municipality of São Sebastião. The lighthouse was inaugurated on 1 February 1934. The sacristy of Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião contains three wooden panels from the second half of the 16th century. They depict episodes from the life of Saint Sebastian. Vila de São Sebastião is also home to a preserved levada and the remains of several former watermills.

Religious and local traditions also give the area its own character. Império do Divino Espírito Santo de São Sebastião is in the town centre and was founded in 1918. Between 1958 and 1965, it was moved to the south side of the church square and adorned with flowers and features depicting the celebrations of the Holy Spirit. The associated festivities take place on Pentecost Sundays and Trinity Sundays. At Largo Terreiro da Fonte, São Sebastião is also associated with touradas à corda, in which the Capinhas perform elegant passes.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

Nature watching along the coast, the trail to the fortress remains and the history of the town centre each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday rental in S. Sebastiao, these interests can help shape your choice of base. Consider which experiences matter most to you: endemic flora and seabirds, coastal locations and their visitor facilities, or the buildings and traditions of Vila de São Sebastião. This way, you can plan your trip around the themes you want to explore in person.
