Ribeirinha offers a range of ways to experience the area on your trip: a route through a landscape shaped by agriculture, with views of the south coast; striking rock formations; and traces of local history and tradition. There are also several themes to choose from when planning your day: you can focus on the landscape and trails, or turn your attention to museums, chapels and festival customs.

Panoramic Views and Striking Rock Formations

Zona de Lazer da Ribeirinha is a leisure area covering approximately 7,200 m², with panoramic views across the parish of Ribeirinha. Its facilities include restrooms, an outdoor picnic area with grills and a wood-fired oven, a children’s play area, and a large lawn for football or other sports. The site brings together several ways to take a break and get active in one place.

The Pedra Furada da Serra da Ribeirinha route starts beside Centro Etnográfico da Ribeirinha. It passes through a predominantly agricultural landscape and offers views of Baía de Angra do Heroísmo and Terceira’s south coast. Seven groups of striking rock formations add a distinctive feature to the landscape. These include rocks known as “pias” and “marcas de corte.”

The Passagem das Bestas route offers a different landscape: as you cross the pasture, you can see the collapse caldera of Vulcão dos Cinco Picos. The caldera lies between Serra da Ribeirinha and Serra do Cume and has an average diameter of seven kilometres. The two routes therefore offer different views: Pedra Furada looks out over the bay of Angra and the south coast, while Passagem das Bestas overlooks the great caldera in the island’s interior.

Cultural Heritage and History

Centro Etnográfico da Ribeirinha showcases cultural heritage connected with the customs and traditions of this parish. Museu Etnográfico da Ribeirinha recreates a rural house from Terceira. Its more than 5,000 objects include pieces that are almost two centuries old and illustrate everyday life in Ribeirinha in the 19th and 20th centuries. Local customs are thus complemented by tangible insights into ways of life in the past.

A notable work of religious art is the original patron saint image from Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro da Ribeirinha: a 15th-century sculpture made of Ançã stone. It is now housed in Museu Paroquial da Ribeirinha. Ermida de Santo Amaro also has a long history. It already existed in 1589 and was rebuilt and enlarged in 1902.

The main festival at Ermida de Santo Amaro takes place every year on 15 January. Check the current festival programme before your trip. Traditions that remain part of celebrations in honour of the patron saint, Santo Amaro, include offering Alfenim and Massa Sovada.

Festival Traditions Throughout the Year

Touradas à corda are also part of Terceira’s festival culture. The annual opening on the island takes place on 1 May at Fonte da Ribeirinha. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the local calendar in advance. This lets you align your travel plans with the festival dates mentioned without conflating them with a visit to historic sites or an exploration of the landscape.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ribeirinha, your interests can guide your decision: would you mainly like to explore the landscapes and rock formations described here, or are you more interested in museums, historic sites and festival traditions? The information about the trails, cultural attractions and festival dates offers concrete starting points. Which focus suits your trip depends on what you would like to discover locally.
