In Suwalski, landscapes shaped by the Ice Age meet hiking and cycling trails, trips on Lake Wigry and distinctive cultural sites. This offers plenty of choice when planning a vacation: you can focus on longer routes, a shorter nature trail, wildlife watching, culture or even a winter activity.
A landscape of moraines and erratic boulders
At 256.4 metres, Góra Cisowa is an example of a terminal moraine. It is also known as Sypana and Gulbineska; because of its shape, it is also called the “Suwalska Fudżijama.”
The “Głazowisko Bachanowo nad Czarną Hańczą” reserve reveals another side of the Ice Age landscape: around 10,000 erratic boulders lie across an area of less than one hectare. They range in circumference from half a metre to eight metres.
Hiking, cycling and exploring by boat
If you are planning a longer hike, the Suwalski Landscape Park has a 21-kilometre stretch of the blue “Znad Szelmentu przez Park Krajobrazowy” hiking trail—the longest hiking trail in the park. Another option is the six-kilometre “U źródeł Szeszupy” nature trail. It runs from Szeszupka to Łopuchowo through the park’s Ice Age landscape. The difference between six and 21 kilometres can help you plan your day, without implying any particular walking time or level of difficulty.
People with specific mobility needs can visit the entire “U źródeł Szeszupy” nature trail by car. This makes it possible to include this landscape in your stay as well. If you prefer to explore by bike, you can choose the “Wokół rynnowego jeziora Hańcza” route, which runs through the Suwalski Landscape Park and around the ribbon lake Hańcza. The route passes through the holiday village of Błaskowizna and by a beach there, equipped with a pier and information boards.
From May to October, an educational water route on Lake Wigry is available aboard the LEPTODORA II boat. Wigry National Park operates a motorboat with a glass bottom for this purpose. There is also a landing stage at the foot of the Wigry monastery for the “Tryton,” which makes regular trips on Lake Wigry. These activities offer different experiences: one focuses on an educational water route in a glass-bottom boat, the other on a trip by ship.
Culture and family activities
You can visit the Muzeum Wigier independently, with an audio guide or as part of a guided tour. Educational activities take place there on weekdays throughout the year. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Camaldolese monastery in Wigry is another cultural destination. It serves the local parish and numerous visitors; its present-day condition is the result of reconstruction after the war damage, beginning in 1947. Wodziłki is also home to a historic wooden Old Believers’ prayer house, known as a molenna. Inside are several icons, old books and crosses.
Two more destinations offer different experiences for families with children. At “Dolina Przygód nad Szeszupą” in Rutka-Tartak, relaxation, play and learning about animals that live in the Suwałki region come together. The “Opowieści Turtula” nature trail is also designed for families: children follow animal tracks and, among other things, reach a maze with animal sculptures. If you travel in winter, Wojewódzki Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji “Szelment” has a snow-covered ski slope with runs measuring 300 and 400 metres.
