Market square, wooden church and a remarkable attic
Jeleniewo’s 18th-century town plan is laid out around a square market place. The square is now a park, with roads leading away from its corners. When exploring the town, it is therefore worth looking at how the square and the roads branching off it fit together—not just at individual buildings.
The present-day wooden church stands beside the market square and was built in 1878. A historic wooden bell tower stands next to the church. It is considered the only monument of its kind of sacred wooden architecture in Suwalszczyzna. Movable historical objects are also part of its history: in 2013, a positive organ dating from after 1878 and three winged angels were added to the register of monuments. The figures had been found in the church attic.
The attic also has a natural history connection: a colony of rare pond bats lives there. Their presence may change over time. The church, bell tower and various finds each tell their own story, while coming together in the same place.
Yotvingian history in the surrounding area
In Szurpiły, the Izba Pamięci Jaćwieskiej is devoted to the history of Jaćwież, particularly the everyday life and battles of the most powerful of the Prussian tribes. The exhibition includes finds from Szurpiły and the surrounding area. A model beneath a glass floor shows part of Góra Zamkowa and the surrounding lakes, and depicts an attack by the Rus on the Yotvingians. There are also replicas of archaeological finds: brooches, pendants, rings, a necklace of the “death crown” type, everyday objects and clay vessels, as well as parts of warriors’ weapons and equipment.
The nearby tourist trail “Tropem Sziurpy” starts at the Izba Pamięci Jaćwieskiej. Eight thematic information boards cover the history of the place and the people who lived in Suwalszczyzna in the early Middle Ages. The trail is 3.2 kilometres long; this distance is for one way. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Two routes, different distances
For planning purposes, the themed trail and cycling route can be distinguished by their stated lengths: the “Tropem Sziurpy” trail is 3.2 kilometres each way, while the “Wśród jezior i wzgórz Jaćwingów” cycling route is 37 kilometres in total. It starts and ends in Jeleniewo. These figures provide a concrete comparison of the distances without specifying walking or cycling times.
